Commodore John C. Carter to be portrayed at Civil War Round Table

WOOSTER − The Wayne County Civil War Round Table Program, which is free and open to the public at the Wooster Branch of the Wayne County Public Library, is continuing with its programs at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday, May 16.

Edward E. Keyse will present a program on Commodore John C. Carter. Carter was the captain of the USS Michigan from 1861-1864. The home port of the USS Michigan was Erie, Pennsylvania. The ship sailed on all of the Great Lakes except Lake Ontario. She was stationed at Sandusky Bay to guard Johnson's Island POW camp in September 1864 when Confederates attempted to free the 3,000 Confederate officers held there.

Keyse refers to this as "The Second Battle of Lake Erie" and gives his presentation in the first person in uniform.

Keyse is a lifelong resident of Lake County. He has more than 50 years of boating and sailing experience, mostly over and across Lake Erie. His boating and military experience gives a unique perspective to Carter's time as captain of the USS Michigan during the Civil War.

Keyse is a member of the Fairport Harbor Yacht Club, Fairport Harbor Marine Museum, Erie Maritime Museum, Lake County Historical Society, Madison Historical Society and the Northeast Ohio Civil War Round Table.
