Common Cause rolls out ad blitz encouraging New Yorkers to ‘skip the crowds’ on National Voter Registration Day

ALBANY — Voting advocates are launching an ad blitz Tuesday to ensure New Yorkers know how, where and when they can cast their ballot for the upcoming election.

Common Cause/NY has timed the campaign, dubbed “Skip the Crowds: Vote Early, Absentee or In Person,” to coincide with National Voter Registration Day and will use social media, billboards, emails and videos to let voters know all of their options amid the coronavirus pandemic.

“Our real goal with these campaigns is to provide the very basic information to voters in an easy to understand and visually-attractive way,” Common Cause/NY executive director Susan Lerner told the Daily News.

Lerner said the group’s goals are to increase turnout, let people know what their options are and to allay confusion and misinformation as President Trump and others have sought to sow distrust in mail-in voting.

“We encourage people to have a plan, have a voting plan,” she added. “Decide which way you’re going to vote and when you’re going to do so.”

The campaign will direct voters to the state Board of Elections website and focus on letting New Yorkers know all the ways they can safely skip the crowds on Nov. 3.

Early voting in New York runs from Oct. 24 through Nov. 1 and voters can find their early voting poll site by visiting voteearlyny.org. The website also links to the state Board of Elections and allows New Yorkers to check their registration or request an absentee ballot.

Voters who do not want to vote in person because of COVID-19 must request an absentee ballot by Oct. 27.

Once they fill out the absentee ballot and sign the envelope properly, they must return it by mail no later than Nov. 3.

The ad blitz is being funded by a $50,000 grant from Craig Newmark Philanthropies.
