Emily Campbell stormed to a stunning home gold at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham while Evie Richard took the mountain bike title on day six. Campbell, the Olympic silver medallist who was England’s flag bearer at the Games, scored a mammoth 286kg total to take gold. It was a personal best for the 28-year-old and also obliterated the Commonwealth Games record.

Elsewhere, Richards raced to an emotional mountain bike title, which was an upgrade on the silver medal she won in 2018. It also came after months of back problems and a recent spell with Covid, and there are further medal opportunities to come this evening. Though Richards had insisted coming into the race she needed to “be realistic” about her chances given recent setbacks, she was ultimately a comfortable winner at Cannock Chase forest.

Later, Katarina Johnson-Thompson put the finishing touches on a comeback gold in the Commonwealth Games as she defended her title. It came after Elish McColgan won a thrilling 10,000m gold after a sprint finish. Daryll Neita is set for a 100 metres final showdown with Olympic champion Elaine Thompson-Herah of Jamaica in one of the most intriguing face-offs of the Games. In the pool, world champion Ben Proud continued to dominate in the men’s 50m free while Scotland’s Duncan Scott took his second gold of the Games by defeating his rival Tom Dean in the men’s 200m individual medley.

“I ran a PB, but I need to run better in these finals. I’m running against one of the best.”

It is Johnson-Thompson’s first victory since winning the world title in 2019 having recovered from at least one career-threatening injury.

A ruptured Achilles threatened her Olympic dream last year and, even though she made it to Tokyo, she suffered a serious calf injury in the 200m and had to withdraw.

Evie Richards puts ‘terrible year’ behind her to win Commonwealth gold medal

18:36 , Michael Jones

Evie Richards put a “terrible year” behind her to storm to Commonwealth gold in Wednesday’s mountain bike race.

There was no sign of the back injury or multiple illnesses that have plagued the world champion over the last six months as she rode clear on the first of the seven laps around Cannock Chase forest to improve on the silver she took in Gold Coast four years ago.

There was one scare with two laps to go when she slid on a corner and had to remount but that was the only moment in the 95-minute race where a Richards win looked in doubt.

Heather Knight to miss the rest of the Commonwealth Games and The Hundred through injury

England captain Heather Knight has been ruled out of the rest of the Commonwealth Games and will also miss The Hundred this season because of a lingering hip problem.

Knight suffered the injury during the Twenty20 opener in England’s multi-format series against South Africa a couple of weeks ago and had an injection before the Games to try to soothe the troubled area.

However, an England and Wales Cricket Board spokesperson has confirmed the issue has “failed to settle down as expected” and Knight is now facing an extended period on the sidelines.

Matthew Hudson-Smith embraces having a ‘target’ on his back in chase for triple medal haul

18:22 , Michael Jones

Matthew Hudson-Smith has finally made his big-stage graduation now its gold he wants.

It’s eight years since he won European silver in Zurich as a teenager but it’s fair to say bold predictions of success to follow didn’t materialise.

His 400m bronze at the recent World Championships in Oregon has changed that and he justified his favourite’s status at the Commonwealth Games with a confident win in his heat at the Alexander Stadium.

He has a busy schedule in his hometown before switching focus to the European Championships in Munich, a punishing summer campaign he is determined to embrace.

Katarina Johnson-Thompson holds onto a slim lead as she tries to retain her Commonwealth Games heptathlon title.

The defending champion is 122 points ahead of England’s Jade O’Dowda after the long jump on Wednesday morning in Birmingham.

O’Dowda posted a leap of 6.52m to earn 1014 points compared to Johnson-Thompson’s best effort of 6.33m.

It means Johnson-Thompson maintains a slender advantage ahead of the javelin, one of her weaker events, and the final 800m on Wednesday evening.

She spoke after her victory saying: “I’m absolutely elated I knew this would be a tough competition, I knew someone was not going to hand it to me on a plate, I knew I would have to work for but I said, ‘whatever I needed to lift today to win that gold medal, I was going to do it’.

“I hope people see how beautiful our sport is. Throughout the week you have seen it doesn’t matter what you look like, what shape you are, what size you are, you can pick up a bar and do it. It is not about coming to the Commonwealth Games or coming to the Olympics it is is about doing something you love.

“We’ve been in the training hall in the back and we’ve heard the crowds all week and it has been mad, absolutely immense. There was a full house today and the flashing of the wristbands and everything has been immense. It is very nice to see actual fans coming to see weightlifting, it is all we have ever wanted.”
