Jake Jarman made it a fabulous four gold medals at the 2022 Commonwealth Games after a sensational display on the vault, while teammates Joe Fraser grabbed a third gold on the parallel bars as England continued to dominate the gymnastics. Alice Kinsella took gold in women’s floor with Ondine Achampong continuing her sensational Games with a silver medal.

One of the stars of England’s athletics team, Keely Hodgkinson, was safely through in the 800m heats, as was Scotland’s Laura Muir, although there was pain for compatriot Jemma Reekie, who was clipped on the final bend of her heat to finish third and suffer an early exit. Meanwhile, England’s Katarina Johnson-Thompson is on top with a slender 17-point lead following two events in the Commonwealth Games heptathlon.

Johnson-Thompson will resume her bid tonight with the shot put and 200m, and six athletics gold medals are also up for grabs. That includes Hannah Cockroft in the T33/34 100m, but Olympic bronze medallist Holly Bradshaw has been forced to pull out of the pole vault. Meanwhile, Adam Peaty will look to deliver gold in the 50m breaststroke final following his shock defeat in the 100m on Sunday. Follow all the latest from Birmingham, below:

“I’m a much happier man,” Peaty tells the BBC. “I had two options this morning: I either fight, or I don’t fight. Anyone who knows me knows that I fight. That means so much for me. What I’ve been through the past year... I lost my spark but I’ve got it back. I’m very happy.

“There were a lot of emotions yesterday. Sport is [ups and downs] and I reached the bottom yesterday. I’m happy with my performance there. I don’t care about times, I was racing tonight.”

‘Jake is the wonderkid’: Joe Fraser hails fellow Commonwealth Games golden boy Jarman

19:09 , Jamie Braidwood

Joe Fraser hailed his “wonderkid” team-mate Jake Jarman after the England duo wrapped up their artistic gymnastics campaign with a glittering seven-gold total haul on the concluding day of apparatus finals at sold-out Arena Birmingham.

Jarman’s soaring triumph in the vault final made him the first English athlete to win four gold medals at the same Games since shooter Mick Gault in 1998, whilst Fraser, nursing a fractured foot, added to his previous success with a dominant display on the parallel bars.

A further gold on floor for Alice Kinsella, rebounding from the disappointment of missing out on the podium in the earlier beam final, ensured England would end a hugely successful campaign having claimed 10 of the 14 gold medals on offer.

Former refugee Cyrille Tchatchet’s Commonwealth medal dream ended by body cramps

18:44 , Jamie Braidwood

After a torturous journey that included sleeping on the streets and the contemplation of committing suicide, former refugee Cyrille Tchatchet’s dream of winning a Commonwealth Games medal for England was ended by his entire body cramping.

It had been eight years since Tchatchet last competed at these Games, then in the colours of his native Cameroon before he sneaked away from Glasgow 2014 with just a pair of shoes and a weightlifting belt to his name.

So began the long process of Tchatchet’s path to UK nationality, with his application for asylum approved in 2016 and full citizenship only approved at the start of this year.

That final step allowed the 27-year-old to compete for England in Birmingham – the city he has made his home – but there was no happy ending as cramps struck right from the start of the men’s 96kg final.

Tchatchet still managed to snatch 158kg to leave him in the silver medal position at the halfway point, but he collapsed after his first clean and jerk attempt and two more failures prevented him registering a final total.

Tom Dean finds silver lining at Commonwealth Games

Double Olympic champion Tom Dean is unfazed by his run of second-place finishes at the Commonwealth Games after Kyle Chalmers claimed the men’s 100 metres freestyle title.

Chalmers put a finger to his lips after clocking 47.51 seconds to win the final, seemingly a gesture in response to reports of a fractious fallout with Australian team-mates Cody Simpson and Emma McKeon.

Dean was runner-up in 47.89secs, edging Scotland’s Duncan Scott into third in 48.27s, while the Londoner later collected his fifth silver in recent days in the men’s 4x200m freestyle relay.

Adam Peaty backtracks after saying he was ‘not bothered’ by Commonwealth Games

18:07 , Michael Jones

Adam Peaty has backtracked on remarks to the BBC in which he suggested he was “not bothered” about the Commonwealth Games.

Hours after a shock fourth-place finish in the men’s 100 metres breaststroke final at the Commonwealth Games, ending an unbeaten eight-year record in his favourite event, Peaty was back in the pool. The 27-year-old was joint fastest in the morning heats of the 50m discipline but a semi-final time of 27.03 seconds was two hundredths of a second slower than Australia’s Sam Williamson in the evening.

Afterwards he told the BBC: “I’m not bothered about it. Commonwealths to me... in the grand scheme of things, it’s about two years’ time [the Paris 2024 Olympics]. That’s no disrespect but I’m still four weeks into my programme [after coming back from the broken foot]. I can’t put too many expectations on myself. It’s only a 50m breaststroke. I’m not going to overthink it.”

Laura Kenny backed to achieve more Olympic success after she considered quitting

17:30 , Michael Jones

Great Britain performance director Stephen Park has backed Laura Kenny to achieve more Olympic success after the five-time gold medallist this week revealed she had considered quitting the sport.

Kenny won scratch race gold for England at the Commonwealth Games on Monday, and then admitted she had wondered if it might be her final race after a terrible period for her personally.

The 30-year-old had planned a second child with husband Jason but suffered a miscarriage in November and then had one of her fallopian tubes removed in January due to an ectopic pregnancy.

Kenny has spoken to Park about possibly taking some time out, and it seems likely she will miss next week’s European Championships, which would in turn put an appearance at October’s World Championships in doubt.

Tonight’s evening session promises to be a belter.

There are six athletics gold medals on offer at the Alexander Stadium with England’s Olympic bronze medallist Holly Bradshaw in women’s pole vault action, Sophie Hahn is one of the favourites to take the victory in the women’s T37/38 100m, and Hannah Cockroft could challenge in the women’s T33/34 100m.

Over at the aquatics centre Adam Peaty will be hoping win his first Commonwealth gold in the men’s 50m breaststroke final especially after finishing out of the medals over 100m on Sunday.

Heather Knight’s availability for the rest of the Commonwealth Games is in fresh doubt as England moved to the brink of the semi-finals with a 26-run victory over South Africa.

The England captain had an injection in her hip in a bid to be fit for cricket’s return to the Games after a 24-year wait but she has been sidelined for her side’s two opening Group B wins at Edgbaston.

She is also likely to miss England’s final group game against New Zealand on Thursday and is nervously awaiting the results of a scan which may determine whether she can participate in the finals stages.

Commonwealth Games 2022 - Gymnastics

England have absolutely smashed the gymnastics in this Commonwealth Games. They’ve won 16 medals including 10 golds.

Jake Jarman picks up four of his own with Joe Fraser claiming three.

Alice Kinsella started her games with a gold in the team event but a fall on the beam during the all-around event seemed to knock her confidence.

However, she recovered to perform an exceptional floor routine on the final apparatus and end her games like she started them... with a gold medal.

A mistake from Romi Brown ends her chance at a medal, which means England’s Ondine Achampong is now guaranteed a medal and it will be at least silver for Alice Kinsella.

Only Australian Emily Whitehead can deny her gold now. Whitehead’s routine is very good. This is going to be close, I think she’ll claim a medal but what colour?

England’s men aren’t going to sweep all the gymnastics gold medals. An excellent routine from England’s James Hall brings him a score of 13.900 which puts him in third place.

Can Alice Kinsella earn her redemption with a gold on floor?

She’s absolutely given herself a chance! What a routine. There’s a couple of minor errors but no more so than any of the other competitors.

Her tumbles are solid as well and this score will be near the top. Can she displace Ondine Achampong though?

Commonwealth Games 2022 - Gymnastics

Up on the high bar Marios Georgiou of Cyprus nails his routine. It’s a fantastic attempt but he can’t dislodge Tyson Bull at the top of the tree.

Oh no! England’s Joe Fraser is next up on the high bar looking for his fourth gold medal of the games. He starts off his routine nicely but fails to keep hold of the ball when his hands slip and he crashes to the mat!

That’s at least one full point knocked off his score but Fraser manages to complete his routine and ends with a flourishing dismount.

It’s very unfortunate that he fell. He’s going to miss out on the medals.

Jake Jarman is a four-time Commonwealth champion!

None of the other competitiors come close to reaching his score and he adds the vault gold to his impressive tally.

Giarnni Regini-Moran claims silver as England continue to sweep up the medals in the men’s gymnastics. That’s a nice birthday present for him.

Oh my gosh. Giarnni Regini-Moran could challenge Jake Jarmon here.

A score of 14.800 for his first vault is quickly followed by a front double somersault that scores him 14.466 which seems a little low to me.

Still, his average is a seriouly impressive 14.633 which puts him comfortably in the silver medal position.

Jake Jarman is going for his fourth Commonwealth gold of the games. He’s a bit tentative in the execution but holds his landing with a slight step.

The difficulty was high which gives him a mammoth score of 14.633.

His next vault is even harder with the difficulty up at six but he lands it! Three and a half twists and a short step on landing. That’s an incredible vault.

He’s now the man to beat. The second vault is awarded a 15.200! Jarman’s average is 14.916. That surely cannot be beaten.

Northern Ireland’s Ewan McAteer moves into first place after a brilliant opening vault that scores him a 14.200. The landing on his second effort is very messy though and a score of 13.300 leaves him with an average of 13.750.

Will that be enough for a medal? Maybe not.

The action in the arena is about to get underway with medals on the line in the artistic gymnastics. Wales’ Emil Barber is up for the men’s vault but fails to land his first double somersault vault.

The score for that one is 12.9.

He doesn’t land a two and a half twist in his second effort either and he’ll be outside the medals with an average of 13.033.

Katarina Johnson-Thompson goes to the top of the heptathlon standings after two events with her points from the high jump but she would have hoped for a bigger lead.

With 2032 points KJT leads Taneille Crase (2015) and Holly Mills (2000).

Katarina Johnson-Thompson fails to clear 1.87m! It’s still a good effort the the Commonwealth champion but she’ll be a little disappointed not to clear that.

Two failures for defending champion Katarina Johnson-Thompson at 1.81m in the heptathlon high jump really piles the pressure onto her final effort.

She clears it!

Holly Mills and Northern Ireland’s Kate O’Connor can’t make the mark.

KJT then has a go at 1.84m and leaps over it on her first attempt. There’s a huge smile across her face now, she’s the only athlete left in the high jump and will have a go at 1.87m to add more points to her tally.

Over on the heptathlon high jump Jada O’Dowda has cleared her personal best 1.75m but can’t compete with Katerina Johnson-Thompson, Holly Mills, Taneille Crase and Kate O’Connor on the next heights.

Johnson-Thompson clears 1.75 and 1.78 with her first two attempts but knocks off the bar going for 1.81m. She will be wanting to put in a good performance here after coming fifth in the 100m hurdles earlier.

Scotland’s Laura Muir spoke to the BBC following her 800m heat saying:

“That was quick wasn’t it! The women’s 800m is so fast right now but it’s nice to be back in the 800m and to run that little bit quicker.

“It’s been tough [the quick turnaround from the world championships] but I was lucky enough to be at the start of the programme at the World Champs.

“I feel good, I’ve tried to be sensible and I’m just happy to be here really.”

Qualification for the women’s 800m final isn’t easy and there are a few competitors that could challenge. Alex Bell and Laura Muir take part in the second heat.

Muir positions herself in the middle of the group after the first lap with Bell just off the front. Inside the final 200m and Muir moves ahead of her English opponent.

Muir finishes second behind Jamaica’s Natoya Goule - who lead from the front - with Alex Bell holding off Canada’s Lindsey Butterworth to come third.

She’ll have a wait to see if her time is enough to get her into the final but it was a quick one - under two minutes - and she’ll be confident.

There was also a horrendous run out after a mix up between Amy Jones and Maia Bouchier. Jones is joined at the crease by the experience Katherine Brunt.

She finishes in a respectable fourth place after Nigeria’s Taiwo Liadi first pushes her down to third before Canada’s Maya Laylor wins the gold with a combined 223kg to drop Alawode out of the medal places.

No-one is going to catch Nauru’s Maximina Uepa who extends her lead in the women’s 76kg competition with a lift of 119kg for a total 215kg.

That’s a junior Commonwealth games record for the 19-year-old.

A strong clean & jerk from Cameroon’s Jeanne Gaelle Eyenga Mboosi had dropped England’s Deborah Alawode down to fourth but a huge lift of 119kg sends the Englishwoman back into second place with just a few athletes remaining.

Can she cling onto a medal?
