Alex Yee fired England to mixed team relay triathlon gold at the Commonwealth Games after a tremendous first leg helped build a lead that Sophie Coldwell, Sam Dickinson and Georgia Taylor-Brown refused to relinquish across one hour 16 minutes.

Wales and Australia settled for silver and bronze at Sutton Park on Sunday with Dave Ellis and his guide Luke Pollard winning the men’s para event, while Katie Crowhurst and guide Jessica Fullagar, took the women’s title for England too.

England’s Matt Walls was involved in a terrifying accident at the Commonwealth Games on Sunday morning when he was catapulted over the barriers and into the crowds at the Lee Valley VeloPark. The 24-year-old Olympic omnium champion received treatment for more than 40 minutes before being taken away by ambulance, with spectators also hurt after he and his bike had come over the top of the barriers on the high banking of the corner.

Elsewhere, England’s Jake Jarman won the all-round Commonwealth gymnastics title, edging out compatriot James Hall. Jarman, 20, handled the pressure of performing at home with distinction in recording a score of 83.450 points in the all-round competition. With another boisterous crowd in attendance at Arena Birmingham, Jarman clinched his second gold medal for the games with a superb display on the high bar. A member of England’s gold medal-winning all-round team on Friday, Jarman claimed the lead after four rounds and held his advantage on the rings, vault and high bar. Olympic silver medallist Jack Carlin revealed he had fallen out of love with cycling since Tokyo last summer as a Commonwealth bronze brought tears on Sunday.

Carlin took third place in the individual sprint after Australian rival Matthew Glaetzer was relegated for an illegal deviation in the deciding leg of their battle.

Though Carlin had already won keirin silver on Saturday, this time there was an emotional reaction as he admitted he had struggled to re-engage with the sport after the Olympics.

“It’s not been an easy few months, especially after coming back from the Games,” Carlin said. “I’ve not really let anyone in on this but I’ve really been struggling with the sport and finding my love for it. I fell out of love with the sport and almost became a robot ticking a box in training.

Sophie Unwin and Georgia Holt savour belated medal success at Commonwealth Games

Sophie Unwin and Georgia Holt were back on the velodrome podium at the Commonwealth Games on Sunday and this time the medals were theirs.

Two days after the controversy of not being awarded bronze for finishing third in the women’s tandem B sprint, they came back and won silver in the time trial to the delight of the London crowd.

Unwin had been left in tears on Friday when it was ruled they would not be given bronze because only four teams started the sprint - with one of the five who had registered unable to race due to injury.

Although their final had been billed as a bronze medal race and they appeared on official results as medallists, Unwin and her pilot Holt were denied medals, and were fined after trying to stand behind the podium ceremony holding an England flag.

But that all provided a little extra motivation on Sunday as they beat Scotland’s Aileen McGlynn, piloted by Ellie Stone, to silver with Jessica Gallagher and Caitlin Ward taking gold for Australia.

“It’s really special,” Unwin said. “I think we both came into today thinking, ‘New day, new race’ but we also wanted to get on the podium and we did exactly what we wanted to do. It’s been a rollercoaster of emotions but we’ve just been resetting. It’s a new day and we go again.”

Holt added: “She’s tenacious. We woke up on Saturday new women.”

Under competition rules, only gold and silver medals are awarded if fewer than five teams take part in an event. But as there had been five teams on the original start-list for the sprint, there was a breakdown in communications over bronze.

Unwin and Holt were clear they thought they were racing for a medal, as did all those watching in the velodrome.

“Had we known we weren’t racing for bronze we maybe would have saved the legs for today,” Holt said.

Officials were confused too - the pair had their post-race interviews cut short when they were told to prepare for the podium, but then re-emerged with Unwin in tears.

After being ushered away from the podium ceremony, they borrowed medals from the England women’s team pursuit squad and had their own unofficial photoshoot on the podium.

“It was a simple case of miscommunication and we’ve apologised to the organisers,” Unwin said. “We didn’t want to cause any upset or show disrespect to the Games or any riders, that wasn’t our intention.

“We were emotional in the moment and we just want to thank everyone in the velodrome, everyone that messaged us and Team England. They’ve given us a huge amount of support and that’s what we’ll take away.

“The moment we had with the crowd will stay with us for the rest of our lives.”

Matt Walls ‘alert and talking’ after horror crash

England’s Matt Walls was involved in a terrifying accident at the Commonwealth Games on Sunday morning when he was catapulted over the barriers and into the crowds at the Lee Valley VeloPark.

The 24-year-old Olympic omnium champion received treatment for more than 40 minutes before being taken away by ambulance, with spectators also hurt after he and his bike had come over the top of the barriers on the high banking of the corner.

Team England said in an update: “Matt is alert and talking - as he has been throughout - and is being given medical attention in hospital.”

Two other riders - the Isle of Man’s Matt Bostock and Canada’s Derek Gee - were also taken to hospital, while two spectators were treated for minor injuries at the velodrome.

Witnesses said that, because of the gradient of the banking, spectators in the front row had been unsighted for the crash. One man received treatment for cuts to his arm while a young girl also received minor attention.

Walls had been trying to avoid riders who had fallen in an incident that began on the entrance to the corner. The stricken pair of New Zealander George Jackson and Australia’s Josh Duffy were sliding up the banking, forcing Walls up on to the barrier and then over it.

Gee also surfed the top of the barrier but managed to avoid following Walls into the stands, albeit then falling heavily once back on the banking.

In a statement, a Birmingham 2022 spokesperson said: “Following a crash at the morning session of track and para track cycling at the Lee Valley VeloPark, three cyclists and two spectators have been treated by the onsite medical team.

“The three cyclists have been taken to hospital. The two spectators did not require hospital treatment...

“We would like to send our best wishes to the cyclists and spectators involved in this incident and to thank the medical team for their swift action.”

Canadian Mathias Guillemette was disqualified from the race for causing the initial crash.

The remainder of the morning session at the velodrome was cancelled and spectators were asked to leave as medical staff attended to Walls.

England’s Lewis Richardson one victory away from medal

From injury hell to Olympic knockbacks, Lewis Richardson insisted he embraces every step of the journey as the Colchester boxer moved to within one win of a Commonwealth Games medal.

Lesser individuals may have contemplated quitting as, after getting into the Team GB set-up, Richardson was diagnosed with three stress fractures in his lower back which sidelined him for most of 2018.

He rebounded to win an Olympic test event the next year and although defeat to world champion Oleksandr Khyzhniak ended his hopes of competing at Tokyo 2020, Richardson claimed his first major medal at the European Championship at the back end of May by collecting silver in the middleweight category.

Richardson’s progress to the quarter-finals in the 75kg category in Birmingham has been far from smooth. The England boxer overcame a standing eight-count against Wales’ Haaris Khan to record a unanimous points win while he was pushed to his limit before earning a split decision verdict over Uganda’s Yusuf Nkobeza.

Another win over Guernsey’s Billy Le Poullain on Wednesday will guarantee Richardson at least a bronze and the 25-year-old can look forward to another rousing reception at the NEC Area, where the decibel level steadily rose as a nip-and-tuck bout against Nkobeza progressed.

“It was brilliant atmosphere, probably the best I’ve ever boxed in,” he said. “These moments are what you train hard for and what you bounce back from those situations for.

“The highs wouldn’t be as high without the lows. If it was all just about the highs you wouldn’t appreciate these moments as much.

“I’ve got a strong mentality, I’m focused and driven and I was able to show that here. I’ve shown that on countless occasions in fights and outside the ring also.”

Four of the five judges awarded Nkobeza the first round but Richardson’s slicker, cleaner work turned the tide and he was given the nod by scores of 29-28, 29-28, 29-28, 30-26 and 28-29.

“A few years ago, opponents like that maybe would have walked through me,” he said. “But I’m mentally and physically stronger now and I’m a much better all-round fighter.

“It was tough, he was very, very strong but I was able to get the win and I’m really happy about that.”

Richardson pointed out he is the only fighter remaining in the draw who had to box in a preliminary round but he believes that will not count against him as he hunts at least a podium position next week.

“I’m going to get it,” he added. “I’ll be more than ready come Wednesday to do the business.

“The other 15 boxers got a bye but I’m fit, I’m strong and I’ve prepared myself in the best way possible. That will show - it showed here and it will show in the next fight and the next fight.”

'Friendly Games' have an edge when India play Pakistan at cricket

The Commonwealth Games like to be referred to as the “Friendly Games“ and up until Sunday even India and Pakistan cricketers had bought into the idea. Women’s cricket is making its Games debut in Birmingham and because of that there has been an all-for-one pioneering camaraderie built into the competition dialing down what is arguably world sport’s most intense rivalry.

But with a path to the medal round opening up for the winners, sisterhood was put aside at Edgbaston Cricket Ground as India thumped Pakistan, who remain winless and dropped to the bottom of the Group A standings. Chasing 100 to win the rain-shortened match, India reached their target with 38 balls to spare as Smriti Mandhana smashed an unbeaten 63 to secure an eight-wicket victory.

Earlier, Pakistan overcame the loss of Iram Javed for a duck as fellow opening batter Muneeba Ali struck a 30-ball 32, but a collapse meant they were restricted to 99 in their 18 overs. Having both lost their Games opener India and Pakistan arrived at the stadium knowing another defeat would just about end any medal hopes, putting more weight on a fixture that never needs any. “Whenever we get the opportunity to play against Pakistan we always want to do well,” said India’s Harmanpreet Kaur. “This game was very important to win, not just because it was Pakistan.”

SLIM HOPES

India can clinch a semi-final spot with a win over Barbados in their final Group A match on Wednesday while Pakistan need victory over Australia and plenty of help in the tiebreaker scenarios to keep their slim hopes of advancing alive. The top two teams in the group will be joined in the final four by two from Group B which is made up of England, South Africa, Sri Lanka and New Zealand.

While the India and Pakistan rivalry is centred around men’s cricket, the women fully understand its significance and their increasing role in it. With Birmingham recognised as one of Britain’s most diverse cities with large Indian and Pakistani communities the crowd at the Edgbaston oval was the largest of the tournament. The atmosphere outside the ground on a drizzly morning was more family outing than the hysteria that usually follows a men’s meeting as fathers and mothers with children in tow soaked up the fun.

“It’s just a game at the end of the day but a good game,” summed up one father in an India jersey accompanied by four young girls.

The occasion was not lost on the players or the fans, the cheering was loud and constant. At the conclusion no one was leaving Egbaston and setting themselves on fire, as distraught fans have done in the past when results have not gone their way, but the smiles on the faces of India supporters signalled their trip home was going to be a more up beat one.

“It is always a special feeling when you play against Pakistan but I would like to say it is just another game and not like, “ohhhh Pakistan”,” said Sneh Rana. “But it is a good game always. It is a special feeling.”

Jessica Gordon-Brown reflects on ‘happy accident’ after claiming Commonwealth Games silver

Jessica Gordon-Brown reflected fondly on the “happy accident” that led to her pursuing weightlifting after claiming Commonwealth Games silver in the women’s 59kg final.

A once budding judoka as well as a national acrobatic gymnastics champion at one point, Gordon-Brown happened upon what would prove to be her true calling in her final year at Brighton University.

“I’m so glad that finally after doing three different sports I found the one for me,” said the 26-year-old from Harefield.

“I think I’m built for it and I glad I stumbled into it. A happy accident.”

Gordon-Brown lifted 86kg in the snatch and then 111kg in the clean and jerk for a combined 197kg, enough for second place which she celebrated with a backflip at Birmingham’s NEC Arena.

Nigeria’s Rafiatu Folashade Lawal set a new Games record with 206kg to capture the gold medal, while Canada’s Tali Darsigny took bronze after lifting just one kilogram less than an ecstatic Gordon-Brown.

“It wasn’t a perfect backflip, but it just shows how much I had to put into that last clean and jerk,” said Gordon-Brown after becoming England’s second weightlifting medallist of the Games, with Fraer Morrow collecting bronze in the women’s 55kg category on Saturday.

“I didn’t really know how to celebrate, it just happened. That was sheer euphoria. I haven’t quite accepted what’s just happened yet.

“It’s something I’ve been dreaming about for a very long time, something I never would have thought I’d hear and it’s really nice to see the hard work finally pay off.”

Earlier on Sunday, Jaswant Shergill, born and raised in Birmingham, finished just outside the medal positions in fourth in the men’s 67kg final.

Triathlons aren’t meant to be a walk in the park but England still strolled, almost leisurely, to Commonwealth Games team gold in the sunshine.

With men’s champion Alex Yee and women’s silver medallist Georgia Taylor-Brown in the line-up, this was the host team’s race to lose and along with Sophie Coldwell and Sam Dickinson they were faultless from gun to tape for a 46 second victory.

No controversies here, just a slight post-race disagreement between Yee and girlfriend Olivia Matthias, who won silver for Wales. She believed that medal meant they could get a dog, Yee wasn’t quite so sure.

“We never shook on that, perhaps after Paris,” he joked.

Birmingham’s leafy Sutton Park has not seen scenes like this since the World Scout Jamboree of 1957. Fans were several deep, their roar rolling around the undulating course as England took the lead and turned the screw on rivals.

Opener Smriti Mandhana bashed 63 off 42 balls as India made light work of Pakistan’s total of 99 inside 12 overs.

Pakistan struggled with the bat and were all out with the final ball of the innings as rain scuppered any hopes of rhythm and momentum.

India’s Sneh Rana did the damage with the ball, grabbing two wickets for 15 runs from four overs.

A really heartening update on Matt Walls following that horror crash at the velodrome. He was treated by medics for about 40 minutes before being taken away but Team England have stated it’s only precautionary checks that he’s being taken to hospital for.

Great, great news. It seems Walls has escaped more or less unscathed. And reports suggest he didn’t land on any spectators, only his bike did, meaning they didn’t sustain any serious injuries either.

A scary hour or so but as good a resolution as there could have been.

An incredible men’s rugby sevens semi-final between New Zealand and Fiji took place a little earlier.

It was a repeat of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and 2018 Commonwealth Games finals and could have gone either way. Fiji trailed 14-7 at the break but fought back to take the game to extra-time at 14-14.

Both teams have chances but Waisea Nacuqu broke clear in extra-time and had just enough pace to outrun the defence to slide over in the corner and secure a 19-14 triumph for the Fijians.

They’ll face South Africa in the final as the Blitzbokke downed Australia 24-12. That gold medal match is later this afternoon.

A horror crash at the Commonwealth Games track cycling has seen Matt Walls fly into the crowd.

A massive pile-up of riders at the Lee Valley VeloPark occurred during the men’s scratch race second heat in qualifying on day three of Birmingham 2022.

Walls required medical attention, with Matt Bostock of the Isle of Man taken away on a stretcher.

A member of the crowd was taken away in a wheelchair covered in blood, while a young girl received treatment for a cut to her arm.

This looks really, really bad. A huge, huge crash at the velodrome.

It happened in scratch race qualifying. Several riders went down hard, with one going over the barrier and both him and his bike flying into the crowd. It looks like that was Matt Walls. He is receiving treatment, as are a couple of spectators, who were covered in blood.

Matt Bostock of the Isle of Man who was taken away on a stretcher. Medical personnel are attending and it looks bad.

An update from the Sandwell Aquatics Centre, where more qualification has been happening this morning.

There’s never any rest for Duncan Scott it seems - after winning gold in the men’s 200m freestyle and taking bronze in the 400m individual medley last night, the Scot qualified for the finals of the men’s 200m butterfly and the semi-finals of the men’s 100m freestyle this morning. Those events both take place this evening.

Scott will go up against South African Chad Le Clos, who only needs one more medal to equal the Commonwealth Games record of 18.

Elsewhere, in the women’s 200m breaststroke, England duo Molly Renshaw and Abbie Wood will go up against favourite Tatjana Schoenmaker of South Africa in the final after all three came through their heats.

The visually-impaired triathlon has been taking place this morning, in front of a hugely enthusiastic crowd, and it’s double GOLD for England.

In the men’s PTVI final, Dave Ellis and guide Luke Pollard secured a dominant gold medal as they smashed the swim-bike-run to cross the line in a time of 57:39. A pair of Australians took silver and bronze in the form of Sam Harding and Jonathan Goerlach.

In the women’s equivalent, there were tears of joy as Katie Crowhurst becomes Commonwealth champion thanks to her gold medal-winning performance, along with guide Jessica Fullagar, with a time of 1:10:32. A late surge by Chloe MacCombe and guide Catherine Sands saw them take a surprise silver for Northern Ireland, with Jessica Tuomela of Canada taking bronze.

Laura Kenny aims for her first Commonwealth Games gold of 2022 after Jake Jarman edged out James Hall for gold in the all-around final.

Hall was hoping to land an elusive all-around gymnastics gold medal in the men’s all-around final at Arena Birmingham after taking silver behind the now-retired Nile Wilson on the Gold Coast in 2018, but Jarman, just 20 years old, produced a stunning displayy with Hall battling through a foot problem and forced to settle for silver.

Kenny will be back in action at the Lee Valley VeloPark on Sunday as she goes for gold in the women’s points race. Kenny was part of the England team pursuit squad that took bronze on Friday and will also be riding the scratch race on Monday.

Teenager Ondine Achampong nailed her crucial final vault to land women’s team gymnastics gold for England at Arena Birmingham on a night that could have spelled the swansong of former world medallist Claudia Fragapane.

In her first major multi-sports competition, 18-year-old Achampong shrugged off the inevitable nerves to score 14.15, enough to see off the surging Australian team, who had reduced the deficit to a mere 0.05 points going into the final rotation. But it was Fragapane, a gymnast at the opposite end of her career, who brought the house down with a stirring floor routine that, whilst failing to land her a place in the individual final, proved a fitting send-off from her Commonwealth Games career as she claimed a fifth gold medal.

Alice Kinsella, Georgia-Mae Fenton and Kelly Simm were the other members of England’s victorious team. Fragapane had burst onto the scene at the 2014 Games in Glasgow, when she claimed four gold medals, and was forced to battle through a series of career-threatening injuries, including concussion and operations on her ankle and elbow, to earn her place in Birmingham.

Fragapane, 24, shared a lingering embrace with 27-year-old Simm, who also won a medal in Glasgow, and, with retirement talk in the air, she admitted: “This is definitely our last Commonwealth Games because we’re not going to go on for four more years.

“I’ve had four major injuries so just to get back and do it again was my main goal. I shouldn’t have come back so quickly but I pushed myself to get here. I’ll take it one step at a time - I’ve got to be careful with this fragile body now.”

England, who were pipped by Canada to gold on the Gold Coast four years ago, started as heavy favourites to regain their title but it fell to a series of cool-headed vault performances to see them safely over the line.

“I was a bit nervous but I just told myself to go out and do the vault I usually do which is more than fine,” admitted Achampong, who delivered the decisive performance.

Besides the battle to beat the Australians, the secondary narrative became a fight between England team-mates to secure the two places per nation available for all-around and individual apparatus finals. Birmingham-born Kinsella topped the all-around qualifying standings on 54.450, 0.3 clear of second-placed Achampong, with Fenton, who finished fourth, the unlucky one to be eliminated. But Fenton, the defending champion, will contest the uneven bars final after a top-scoring 14.0 ahead of Achampong, who was hugely impressive on what was her debut in senior international competition.

Kinsella, the 2019 European champion, was second best on beam behind Australia’s Georgia Godwin, with Fenton taking third and with it England’s second final place over Achampong by virtue of a higher execution rating. Kinsella again top-scored with 13.450 on the floor while, where Achampong will join her in the final. Fragapane finished well adrift of the final places with 12.450, but appeared content as the final twists and turns of her career played out. Scotland’s Shannon Archer had a successful night, top-scoring in vault qualifying with 13.5 and also reaching the horizontal bars final, while she will be joined by compatriot Cara Kennedy in the all-around final.

Claudia Fragapane has certainly taken the long road back to the podium but now she’s got there again she admits her race could be nearly run.

In Glasgow eight years ago, she became the first Englishwoman in 84 years to win four gold medals at the Commonwealth Games. This was followed by a world medal and a sequinned bid for the Glitterball with an appearance on Strictly Come Dancing.

But gymnastics is a sport based on the premise of what comes up must come down and those soaring highs were soon followed by crushing lows. She announced she was quitting the sport, aged just 18, after failing to make the final at the Rio Olympics.

Fragapane returned but then suffered a series of career-threatening injuries, missing the defence of her Commonwealth titles in 2018 with an Achilles injury and suffering a serious concussion in training that ended her bid for last year’s Tokyo Olympics.

All of which meant her victory as part of England’s women’s gymnastics team, alongside Kelly Simm, Georgia-Mae Fenton, Alice Kinsella and Ondine Achampong, had extra significance.

Duncan Scott beats Tom Dean in swimming’s ‘battle of Britain’ at Commonwealth Games

Duncan Scott claimed revenge on Tom Dean by beating him to victory in the men’s 200 metres freestyle final at the Commonwealth Games, as Adam Peaty kept on course for a third consecutive gold in the 100m breaststroke.

Scott, swimming for Scotland at the Sandwell Aquatics Centre, had missed out to Dean in the Olympic final in Tokyo last year but triumphed on Saturday night in a time of one minute 45.02 seconds, with Dean taking silver for England in 1:45.41.

Dean led at halfway but Alloa swimmer Scott, who won four medals in total in Japan last summer, came roaring back to secure victory.

Scott also claimed a bronze in the 400m individual medley while Dean was part of the England men’s 4x100m freestyle relay team which took silver in the last race.

The 25-year-old Scott, who became the first Briton to win four medals in the same Olympic Games in Tokyo, said he and Dean were good mates and that their rivalry spurred them both on.

A low-scoring, intense quarter-final in the men’s rugby sevens between Australia and Samoa. It ends 7-0 to Australia as a solitary, second-half try proved enough.

It means Australia will play South Africa and New Zealand face Fiji in the semi-finals tomorrow afternoon before the bronze-medal match and gold-medal match in the evening.

The final event of the evening in the swimming pool and it’s another SILVER for Team England behind Australia in a 4x100m freestyle relay, this time for the men.

An enthralling race as there’s nothing to choose between England, Canada and Australia for the first two legs - Lewis Burras and Jacob Whittle going for England.

The third leg saw William Yang edge the Aussies ahead as James Guy kept England in second before Tom Dean desperately tried to catch Kyle Chalmers on the anchor leg and although Dean closed the gap, Australia took gold in a Commonwealth Games record time.

Canada took bronze just ahead of Wales.

SILVER for Team England in the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay. Australia were a class apart to win gold in 3:30.64, almost six seconds clear of England.

But the English quartet of Anna Hopkins, Abbie Wood, Isabella Hindley and Freya Anderson held off Canada to take an impressive silver.

It’s been absolutely electric at the gymnastics this evening, with the women’s team final taking place. The crowd have been roaring Team England on as they look to match the men’s gold from last night.

A 12.600 on floor for Australia’s Breanne Scott keeps them hot on England’s heels but Alice Kinsella smashes a vault to score 13.900 before Ondine Achampong hits an absolutely incredible vault! It scores a mammoth 14.150 and that takes England’s total to an unassailable 161.000.

That will be GOLD for England! A brilliant performance from Kinsella, Achampong, Georgia-Mae Fenton, Claudia Fragapane and Kelly Simm.

Australia will earn silver and the battle for bronze now comes down to the final couple of performances from Wales and Canada.

It’s an incredibly close race that basically all comes down to the touch and South Africa’s Pieter Coetze is able to take gold in 53.78s, 013s ahead of England’s Williams.

England 109-5 (17.1 overs) beat Sri Lanka 106-9 (20 overs) by five wickets

England seal victory in their women’s T20 cricket opener at Edgbaston. Having restricted Sri Lanka to 106-9, they had a couple of scares but ultimately cruised to a five-wicket win with 17 balls to spare.

Alice Capsey top-scored with 44 from 45 balls before being dismissed with just two runs required as Maia Bouchier (21no) saw them over the line. Job done for the hosts

A couple of medal updates from the events we weren’t focusing on at the swimming.

In the men’s 50m freestyle S13 final - a category for visually impaired athletes - Scotland’s Stephen Clegg took SILVER and was agonisingly close to gold, touching the wall just one-hundredth of a second behind Nicolas Turbide of Canada.

There was further home success in the women’s 50m freestyle S13 as England’s Hannah Russell also took SILVER as Katja Dedekind of Australia won gold.

Dominant from Adam Peaty! Foot injury? What foot injury?

The greatest breaststroke swimmer of all time cruises into the 100m breaststroke final as he crushes the field with a time of 59.02s, almost a full second quicker than his time in the heats this morning.

No-one in either semi-final even got close to that time and he’ll gun for another gold in the final tomorrow.

Joe Truman horror crash overshadows track cycling at Commonwealth Games

Joe Truman was knocked out cold and suffered a suspected broken collarbone after a horror 70km/h keirin smash that shocked the Commonwealth Games.

The 25-year-old crashed into Australian defending champion Matt Glaetzer and amid flying debris was knocked unconscious, receiving oxygen from trackside medics.

Truman was taken to hospital in a wheelchair after the second-round horror with Glaetzer’s skinsuit ripped to shreds.

Six-time Olympic champion Sir Chris Hoy said: “It reminds us how tough these guys are and how brave you have to be.”

Ok, here we go. They took a one-two for Team GB at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games but now Tom Dean and Duncan Scott are on opposing teams for this 200m freestyle final.

The Englishman and the Scot are great friends but they’ll do battle in one of the most anticipated swimming races of the entire Commonwealth Games.

There are other swimmers from the home nations in this final as well - including Joe Litchfield, Max Litchfield and Calum Jarvis. PLus a couple of Aussies in the form of Elijah Winnington and Mack Horton aiming to spoil the party. Box office!

Sri Lanka’s innings comes to a close and although they scratch out a few runs in the final overs, England will have a very chaseable target of 107.

Sophie Ecclestone was the pick of the England bowlers with 3-25 and her batters will fancy their chances of knocking off these runs to get their campaign off to the perfect start.

Another medal for Team England in the pool and this time it’s SILVER for Imogen Clark in the women’s 50m breaststroke.

She comes agonisingly close to dipping under the 30-second mark but clocks 30.02s to juuuuuust pip Chelsea Hodges of Australia by 0.03s.

Neither can get close to the winner though, as South Africa’s Lara van Niekerk touches the wall in 29.73s to set a new Commonwealth Games record.

The semi-finals of the women’s 50m freestyle follow and there are three home swimmers into the final as Eglish duo Anna Hopkin and Isabella Hindley make it along with Northern Ireland’s Danielle Hill.

And he does it!

A brilliant, brilliant swim from Ben Proud - especially the second 25m - and he takes GOLD in the 50m butterfly. The English swimmer doesn’t take a breath for the entire length and gets the touch on the wall for a time of 22.81s - a new Commonwealth Games record.

He finishes 0.4s ahead of Tzen Wei Teong with Cameron Gray nabbing bronze. English duo Jacob Peters and Adam Barrett finished 5th and 7th respectively, with Wales’s Lewis Fraser in 8th.

England in complete control at Edgbaston as they’ve torn through the Sri Lanka batting line-up. Issy Wong and Freya Kemp have taken two wickets apiece, with Katherine Brunt and Sophie Ecclestone nabbing one.

It’s been a disappointing rugby sevens competition for the home nations, with only Scotland’s men reaching the knockout stages but the other teams are still competing for the minor places, where they’re having more success.

England’s women beat South Africa 36-0, while Scotland downed Sri Lanka 58-0 meaning those team will meet in the 5th-place play-off tomorrow.

On the men’s side, England thumped Jamaica 45-7 to move into the semi-finals of the battle for 9th. The worst they can finish now is 12th.

BRONZE for Wales in the women’s sprint! A brilliant pair of races from 19-year-old Emma Finucane after falling 1-0 behind to England’s Sophie Capewell.

In the decider, she got on Capewell’s shoulder round the final bend and powered past her. A second bronze medal of the Games for the Welsh teenager after she also came third in the team sprint. Fantastic stuff!

It’s GOLD for Ellesse Andrews in the women’s sprint. That has to go down as a shock - with the New Zealander beating Olympic champion Kelsey Mitchell of Canada 2-0 in the gold medal spare - winning with a race to spare.

In the second race, Andrews stormed past her rival with about half a lap to go and Mitchell had nothing left in the tank. Superb riding by here, sealing New Zealand’s fifth gold of the Games.

In the all-British bronze medal contest, Welsh 19-year-old Emma Finucane held off England’s Sophie Capewell to level the match at 1-1. It all comes down to the deciding race for the bronze medal.

Firstly, an update on Joe Truman - who suffered that horrific crash in the men’s keirin earlier. Truman did indeed lose consciousness during the crash - hence his body going limp - and he’s been taken to hospital with a suspected broken collarbone but initial updates suggest there is no other serious damage. That’s as good a news as there could be, given the severity.

Also, just to let you know Aaron Gate won GOLD in the all-New Zealand clash in the final of the men’s 4000m individual pursuit as he beat teammate Tom Sexton by over four seconds. Silver for Sexton.

The women’s sprint finals are also underway. Just like the semi-finals they’re best of three. A complete thumping by England as they score four goals in the final quarter to seal a 12-0 triumph over Ghana in the women’s hockey competition.

Grace Balsdon, Anna Toman, Hannah Martin and Laura Unsworth netted in that fourth quarter. Job done.

A huge relief that Truman and Glaetzer are both moving and hopefully no long-lasting damage has been done. They’re in safe hands with the medical personnel.

In the carnage of the crash, they’re taking the result of the heat as it occurred so close to the end, meaning Shah Sahrom of Malaysia, Trinidad’s Kwesi Browne and Jack Carlin of Scotland advance to the men’s keirin final.

The track is cleared and tidied and the second semi-final can commence. There’s a bit of an edge to the atmosphere (understandably) at the Lee Valley Velodrome but it’s a second Trinidadian, Nicholas Paul, who wins it, while Callum Saunders (NZL) and Matt Richardson (AUS) also advance in second and third.

CRASH! This looks really, really nasty for England’s Joe Truman.

In the first men’s keirin semi-final, on the final lap, Australia’s Matt Glaetzer goes down after clipping the bike in front, right in front of Truman, who can’t avoid him and goes down hard. Truman’s body seems to go limp as he slides down the banking and he doesn’t move for a couple of minutes as medics surround him. It’s scary stuff

Eventually he sits up, amid huge roars from the crowd. That’s a huge relief. He is put into an oxygen mask, transferred into a wheelchair and wheeled off the track.

Glaetzer also went down hard - his skinsuit is in an absolute state, torn to shreds but the two-time Commonwealth keirin champion was able to get up of his own accord and walk back to the Australian pen.

They were probably travelling at 70kph when the crash happened.

Saaga Malosa and Ampex Isaac could be forgiven for not being too concerned by talk of the relevance of the Commonwealth - or these Games. They are more worried for the future of their nation, writes James Toney in Birmingham.

Tuvalu - population 11,931 - is the third smallest country in the world, behind only Nauru and Vatican City. Compromised of just nine islands and thinly-populated atolls, it faces extinction because of climate change.

Rising seas and deadly storms have started to swamp the islands, specks in the Solomon Sea, and fears are growing that Tuvalu will be soon uninhabitable or may vanish completely.

There is even an emergency plan to evacuate the entire country to a few uninhabited islands that currently belong to Fiji.

All of which puts a 21-10, 21-12 defeat to England’s Javier and Joaquin Bello in the beach volleyball preliminary rounds into rather stark contrast.

A home nations humbling at the Commonwealth Games has only exacerbated the turmoil in rugby sevens ahead of next season’s merger of England, Scotland, and Wales, writes Andy Baber in Birmingham.

Only Scotland’s men made it through to the knockout phase at Birmingham 2022, with Team England’s men and women both falling short of the medal matches in Coventry.

This year’s hosts claimed double bronze at Gold Coast 2018 but comprehensive defeats to New Zealand in their final group games ensured there would be no repeat four years later.

Those results come off the back of the decision from the three unions to combine once again to form Great Britain men’s and women’s teams for the 2023 World Sevens Series.

And opinion amongst the players was mixed on the future direction of the sevens game.

GOLD for Bryony Botha in the women’s 3000m individual pursuit at the velodrome as she sets a new Commonwealth Games record in a time of 3:18.456.

She nearly caught her opponent Maeve Plouffe in the final and recorded a comfortable win by 8.66 seconds. Australia’s Plouffe settles for silver.

Chalk up a BRONZE medal for Team Scotland and it’s come in the women’s 3000m individual pursuit. Neah Evans was taking on Sarah Roy of Australia and Evans was in control of the race from the off.

She eventually crossed the line in 3:25.050, over three seconds ahead of Roy. Evans was unlucky to miss out on a place in the gold medal race when she broke the Commonwealth Games record in qualifying, only to see it surpassed by two other riders but she leaves with a medal round her neck.

That gold medal race is taking place now as Bryony Botha of New Zealand squares off with Maeve Plouffe of Australia in an all-Antipodean battle.

England’s women are in control on the hockey pitches against Ghana as they lead 3-0 in the second quarter.
