Access to high-speed Internet is coming to more than 59,000 underserved homes, businesses, farms and other important facilities in need across Florida, according to the governor's office.

Gov. Ron DeSantis this month signed off on awarding over $247 million to 40-plus counties through the federal government's Broadband Infrastructure Program, according to a state news release.

"Broadband Internet infrastructure will change the landscape and quality of life for Florida families and businesses, connecting them to workforce training, jobs, educational resources and telehealth services," J. Alex Kelly, secretary of the state Department of Economic Opportunity, said.

A small portion of those funds were dedicated to projects in Volusia, Flagler and St. Johns counties.
