Community Action to accept applications for Home Gardening Program

Community Action of Etowah County on Monday will begin accepting applications from low-income families to participate in its annual Home Gardening Program, according to a news release from the organization.

Qualified applicants will receive a $30 voucher to purchase gardening seed, vegetable plants or fertilizer from participating vendors. This year’s vendor is Farmtown, 411 Sardis Road, Boaz.

Applications will be accepted, client interviews conducted and vouchers distributed from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Community Action office, 624 Broad St.

The program’s objective, according to the release, is to help families move toward self-sufficiency and supplement their dietary needs by planting home gardens.

Applicants must provide Social Security cards of all household members, a photo ID of the head of household, previous month’s household total gross income (Social Security, SSDI and Veterans Administration records, check stubs, child support, etc.) and food stamp allotment letters.

Monthly income limits are $1,416 for one person, $1,908 for two, $2,399 for three, $2,891 for four, $3,383 for five and $3,874 for six; add $492 for each household member above that.
