Community Action's first Whack for Warmth raises thousands

BATTLE CREEK - Community Action's first Whack for Warmth golf outing brought in more than $29,000 to help keep families warm this winter.

In previous years, the nonprofit held the Annual Walk for Warmth to raise money for utility assistance in the five-county service area.

"This year we decided to try something new, we hosted our first Whack for Warmth golf outing at Squirrel Hollow Golf Course!," the organization said in a news release.

The event was held Aug. 5 at Squirrel Hollow Golf Course in Battle Creek.

"There was great food, raffle prizes, and time outside on a beautiful day to socialize with other community members – all while helping family, friends, and neighbors in need," the organization said.

The funds raised goes towards those in need with utility assistance in Barry, Branch, Calhoun, Kalamazoo, and St. Joseph counties.

"We estimate, for every $300 we raised, Community Action is able to help a local family stay safe and warm in their home throughout the winter months," the agency said in a statement.

Additionally, many hole sponsors contributed to the success of this outing, as well as raffle prizes donated by various local area businesses."
