Traffic detoured around work zone

The Texas Department of Transportation has closed a portion of Spur 331, at the railroad crossing located just north of FM 3020, to all traffic. The closure will allow the railroad company to install a new crossing. Traffic is detoured around the area, but local southbound Spur 331 traffic will continue to have access to Olive Street.

The closure will also allow crews to safely mill and repave a portion of the roadway. Weather permitting, drivers can anticipate Spur 331, at the crossing, to be closed for two weeks.

The road work is part of a $1.5 million project to make improvements to the State Spur 331 and FM 3020 intersection in eastern Lubbock. Improvements include realigning the intersection to help prevent wrong-way traffic and providing additional spacing to accommodate the turning movements for large and commercial vehicles, placing new pavement and new concrete medians and barriers.

The project is scheduled to be completed in late November 2022.

Railroad repairs planned for North University

The railroad crossing on University Avenue, at U.S. 84 in north Lubbock, will be closed to traffic starting Monday, Sept. 12. The week-long closure will allow Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad to safely perform work to remove then reinstall the railroad crossing, and TxDOT crews to resurface the roadway.

Traffic will be detoured around the work zone using Erskine Street, Cesar E. Chavez Drive (Avenue U) and US 84 (Clovis Road).

Work will take place weather permitting and is expected to wrap-up and the road reopened on Monday, Sept. 19.

Comfort Keepers event benefits Meals on Wheels

Throughout the month of September, Comfort Keepers of Lubbock will be hosting the 12th Annual Feed Seniors Now event, benefiting Lubbock Meals on Wheels’ Weekend Meal Program. This program provides weekend sacks to clients in Lubbock and Wolfforth who have no access to food or assistance on weekends.

Because of the growing need, Lubbock Meals on Wheels is now providing assistance to 500 seniors each weekend, 28% more than this time last year. Still, the waiting list continues to grow. They ask the community to join by:

• Organizing a food drive through your business, church, or organization.

• Ordering specific food items from your favorite online company and shipping them to Lubbock MOW, 2304 34th St., Lubbock, TX 79411

• Donating directly to this campaign at lubbockmealsonwheels.org.

The organization is seeking a variety of non-refrigerated items. For more information, call Lisa Carson at (806) 687-7800 or contact Mary Gerlach at mary@lubbockmow.org or (806) 792-7971.

Lubbock Meals on Wheels seeks volunteers

Lubbock Meals on Wheels is in need of fall volunteer drivers, both regular and substitute, each weekday to deliver meals in Lubbock and Wolfforth. Individuals do not need to commit to a set schedule to volunteer for LMOW.

Some drivers prefer to take the same route on the same day each week whereas others prefer to just substitute when needed. For many of our recipients, the LMOW volunteer may be the only person they see during the day.

Each route takes approximately one hour to deliver. Most routes have 10-16 clients.

A background check and one hour orientation is required for all delivery volunteers.

If you would like to try us out first, we can pair you up with one of our volunteers for a ride-along. To schedule that, call at (806)792-7971.

Delivery volunteer opportunities are available from 10:45 a.m. to noon, Monday through Friday. Non-delivery volunteer opportunities are available throughout the day Monday through Friday.

Anyone interested in volunteering can call (806) 792-7971.
