Community Health Navigators schedule events throughout county in August

ADRIAN — The Lenawee County Health Department’s Community Health Navigators program will be staging presentations about health and well-being in Lenawee County communities in August.

At noon Tuesday, Aug. 8, the Navigators will be at the Morenci Senior Center, which is inside Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 800 W. Chestnut St. At 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 9, the Navigators will return to Morenci for a presentation at the Stair District Library, 228 W. Main St.

Other program dates in include 10 a.m. Aug. 15 at the Bliss-Liewert Senior Center in downtown Blissfield, 206 S. Lane St., and 5:30 p.m. Aug. 17 at the Adrian District Library in downtown Adrian, 143 E. Maumee St.

Community Health Navigators (CHNs) help connect individuals to community resources and build individual competence, according to an announcement from the Lenawee County Health Department. CHNs have the goal of improving overall community health.

Programming is available at no cost and is open to all.

Community Action Agency has back-to-school savings tips webinar

Back-to-school season shouldn’t break the bank account.

Some savvy savings tips will be shared during a scheduled webinar from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 8, with Community Action Agency.

The free, online program requires registration so that participants can receive the access link to the meeting, which will be held via Zoom. To register, call 517-740-1027 or email smjones@caajlh.org.

Topics the webinar will address include: knowing what school supplies students will need, buying school supplies in bulk, knowing when is the best time to shop for deals and sales, planning low-cost lunches, comparing prices, and car pooling when gas prices are high.

Presentation looks at how to make yards pollinator friendly during autumn

TIPTON — Autumn may be the end of the growing season, but those choices people make in their yard now during the summer could benefit pollinators through the winter and beyond.

Hidden Lake Gardens in Tipton, 56214 Monroe Road (M-50), will host a presentation from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 8, informing attendees about how they can create habitat, preserve nesting sites, rethink the “perfect” lawn and attract even more pollinators for next spring.

“You will walk away with practical suggestions you can incorporate into your own yard,” a news release from Hidden Lake Gardens said.

“The Pollinator-Friendly Yard in Autumn” is open to the public. Registration is not required. The program is sponsored by the Hidden Lake Gardeners Club. There is no cost to attend, HLG said. To contact HLG, call 517-431-2060.

God’s Bread Basket serves free dinners every week

TECUMSEH — Dinner’s On Us, an outreach of God’s Bread Basket in Tecumseh, offers free dinners from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays at Tecumseh Church of Christ, 312 W. Chicago Blvd. There are no age or income requirements. Donations can be forwarded to God’s Bread Basket at P.O. Box 373, Tecumseh, MI 49286.

WellWise Services Area Agency on Aging receives awards

BROOKLYN — WellWise Services Area Agency on Aging, formerly known as Region 2 Area Agency on Aging, was recently named one of the recipients of two USAging Aging Innovations/Achievement awards.

“Vaccines for Wellness” was selected in the Public Health and Vaccinations category and the “Living Well Program” was selected in the Statewide Collaborative in Michigan for AAA Evidence-Based Program Delivery category, a news release from WellWise Services said.

USAging’s 48th annual conference and tradeshow was July 16-18 in Salt Lake City.

BULLETIN BOARD

• Teens in sixth through 12th grades who participated in the Lenawee District Library’s summer reading program are invited to the library’s wrap-up party scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 8, at the main branch of the library in Adrian, 4459 W. U.S. 223. Attendees will be treated to snacks and games, and they will be able to find out who the grand prize summer reading winners are. • Lenawee Evening Toast meets on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month at 6:15 p.m. in the community room at the Lenawee Intermediate School District offices, 4107 N. Adrian Highway. A social reception begins at 6 p.m. Toastmasters offers the opportunity to learn communication and leadership skills. The next scheduled meeting date is Tuesday, Aug. 8. • The Adrian Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Auxiliary will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the post in Adrian, 726 N. Main St. All VFW members are encouraged to attend.

• The Toledo Submarine Veterans meet on the second Tuesday of the month at the Genesis Village Events Center, 2429 S. Reynolds Road in Toledo. • The Lenawee Peacemakers will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Dominican Hall on the campus of Siena Heights University in Adrian. The meeting is open to the public.

• The Hidden Lake Beekeepers Foundation meets from 7 to 9 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month at the Addison Gun Club, 6500 Somerset Road. Meetings are free and open to anyone interested in beekeeping. The next scheduled meeting of the foundation is set for Tuesday, Aug. 8.
