Beginning Reader Book Club

The Coos Bay Public Library will offer a Beginning Reader Book Club the fourth Tuesday of the month this fall at 3:30 pm for kids grades kindergarten through third grade (October 24 & November 28). During each program, participants will have an opportunity to hear a story, explore books and participate in an experiment or art project, All participants will receive a free book to take home. Parents or caregivers must attend with children; siblings are welcome. Pre-registration is not required. Based on the research-based Fostering Readers program initiated by Washington Cooperative Library System, the Beginning Reader Book Club supports literacy development for kids grades kindergarten through third grade. The program is intended to foster a love of reading in beginning readers. Each session will feature a different type of book-September 26 will feature comic books and allow participants the opportunity to create their own comic book. Oregon's Dino-Story Exhibit

The North Bend Public Library is excited to partner with the Museum of Natural and Cultural History and the University of Oregon to bring "Oregon's Dino-Story Exhibit" to North Bend. "Oregon's Dino-Story Exhibit" is a full exhibit uncovering the mysteries of Oregon in the age of the dinosaurs and will be available in the Children's Room of the North Bend Public Library from Tuesday, October 24 to Tuesday, November 28. Children of all ages can explore fossil evidence, dig deep into time, and discover what makes a dinosaur a dinosaur. NBPL will also have a special Dino Storytime on Tuesday, October 24 at 10:30 AM and a Drop-In Dino Party, celebrating the exhibit's opening on Wednesday, October 25 from 4:00-5:00 PM. New weekly take-home kits and activities will be available while the exhibit is at NBPL. Photography Exhibit by Gary Sharp Through November

The North Bend Public Library is pleased to present a photography exhibit showcasing the work of NBPL former director and longtime photographer Gary Sharp. This retrospective exhibit features an eclectic mix of landscapes, portraits, travel photos taken during Sharp's travels in Europe, the West Coast, and New England, and still life images of everyday objects around his home of North Bend, Oregon. The exhibit also includes a selection of small format Polaroid image transfers. Sharp's still life images highlight his experimentation with still life photography, which focuses on capturing everyday objects as they are found. Sharp says, "I...have a keen interest in the photography of small things, such as ordinary household or found objects. I like waiting for soft, vivid light to bring out the color, simplicity, and beauty of things that otherwise wouldn't attract much attention. Close-up photography is a fine way to enjoy quiet moments in my kitchen or by a sunlit window." The exhibit will be available during the month of November. The exhibit can be viewed in the Conference Room at the North Bend Public Library. Gary Sharp was the director of the North Bend Public Library until his retirement in 2017. His photography has been featured in exhibits at the Coos Bay Public Library, Portland's Blue Sky Gallery, and at the K-21 Artist Collective in Copenhagen, Denmark. Additionally, his photographs have been published in Oregon People Magazine and in two literary works which feature writers and artists of Coos County, Voices in Winter Rain and Spirit Fish: Voices of the South Coast. His photo Umpqua River in December was also included in the Oregon Rivers Quality Report published by the Oregon Environmental Council. Storytime with Mrs. Claus

As part of the North Bend Christmas Annual Tree Lighting & Festival on Main, the North Bend Public Library is offering Storytime with Mrs. Claus! Families with children are invited to sing Christmas songs and listen as Mrs. Claus reads a holiday story. After Storytime, children can make a holiday craft and write a letter to Santa, which they can mail using the Library's Santa Claus mailbox. This program is free to attend. Program capacity is 100 people per session. Storytime with Mrs. Claus is on Saturday, December 2. There are two identical programs starting at 10:00 AM and 11:00 AM. Making DIY Holiday Gifts Class

Natural Grocers Cheryl O'Dell will guide attendees through making a quick and easy holiday gift, using essential oils and other ingredients. The class is free to attend, and all supplies will be provided. The first 20 attendees will receive a free essential oil diffuser. Tuesday, December 12 at 3:30 PM.
