Community Calendar: Toys for Tots, family fun day, holiday events

Dec. 7—Ongoing: The Superior Fire Department is collecting toys to distribute to Douglas County children in need through the annual Toys for Tots program.

Donations will be accepted through Dec. 14. New, unwrapped toys are being collected at the headquarters fire station, 3326 Tower Ave.; Aces on 29th, 2827 Oakes Ave.; Cenovus, 2407 Stinson Ave.; Dollar General, 216 Belknap St.; the Superior-Douglas County Family YMCA, 9 N. 21st St.; Walgreens, 2015 Tower Ave.; Angie's Closet, 1315 Tower Ave.; Burger King, 724 Belknap St.; Artistic Florals by Leslie, 1208 Tower Ave.; Empower Superior Nutrition, 100 Belknap St.; National Bank of Commerce, both locations on Tower Avenue; the Northwood Technical College administration office, 600 N. 21st St.; and the Salvation Army, 916 Hughitt Ave.

Superior: The Chamber of Superior-Douglas County holds its holiday open house 2-4:30 p.m. at the Chamber Office, 205 Belknap St. A ribbon-cutting at 1:30 p.m. celebrates the renaming of the large conference room with Superior Choice Credit Union. Desserts and beverages served.

Superior: The University of Wisconsin-Superior hosts a Yellowjacket Family Fun Day in the Lydia Thering Fieldhouse at the Marcovich Wellness Center. The free event runs from 9 a.m. to noon, and features members of the UWS baseball and softball teams. Children will be able to play floor hockey, basketball, soccer, tennis, volleyball and compete in races. Batting cages will be available, as well as yard games and crafts. Attendees will receive an autograph card with a coupon for a free scoop of custard from Culver's in Superior, as well as a free youth ticket to a future Yellowjacket home game.

Solon Springs: Wisconsin representatives Chanz Green, Dave Armstrong and Angie Sapik, along with Wisconsin Sen. Romaine Quinn, are holding a listening session on whitetail deer at 10 a.m. at the Solon Springs Community Center on Business Highway 53.

Superior: Enjoy an evening of Advent Carols, poetry and the Great Advent Antiphons beginning at 7 p.m. at Cathedral of Christ the King, 1111 Belknap St. The concert features Cathedral organist Rachael Kresha and chamber choir to celebrate the peacefulness of waiting, wisdom and preparation for Christmas. Superior: Superior Public Library hosts its Lego Club for kids from 4-6 p.m.

Wentworth: The Old Brule Heritage Society holds its December meeting at the Amnicon Town Hall on U.S. Highway 2. The evening begins with a Christmas potluck dinner at 6 p.m. At 7 p.m., member Brian Paulson will give a presentation on "Ghost Towns Revisited," a brief history on local towns and settlements and how past and present names were derived. The business meeting follows. Rather than a gift exchange, donations for children will be collected for area youth. The public is invited to attend.

Superior: Staff for U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson will hold mobile office hours from noon to 1 p.m. at Superior Public Library, 1530 Tower Ave. Constituents can meet with staff to request assistance with a federal agency or other federal matters.

Poplar: The Gravel Pit Tavern at 5781 S. County Highway P will host a holiday craft market from 2-5:30 p.m.

Superior: Take a self-guided tour 5:30-7:30 p.m. during Fairlawn's Old Fashioned Christmas and enjoy the elaborately decorated mansion, holiday treats and youth activities. Tickets are $8 for adults; $5 for seniors, college students and ages 13 and older; and free for 12 and younger. Tickets are available at

Superior: The American Legion meets at 7 p.m. at the Richard I. Bong Veterans Historical Center, 305 Harbor View Parkway.

Superior: The University of Wisconsin-Superior Music Department will host its Percussion Ensemble Concert at 7:30 p.m. in Thorpe Langley Theater in Old Main, 1710 Weeks Ave. The concert features a variety of musical styles and instruments. Tickets are $5 for adults and free for students.

Superior: The Superior Central High School class of 1957 holds its monthly luncheon at 11:30 a.m. at VIP, 1201 Tower Ave. All classmates and friends are invited to attend.

Superior: The Salvation Army hosts a free event for children younger than 12. Children will have the opportunity to make their family a Christmas gift or choose from some gifts there. Craft tables will be set up with different items to make 4-8 p.m. at the Salvation Army, 916 Hughitt Ave. All youth must be accompanied by an adult and a resident of Douglas County.

Superior: Bethel Lutheran Church holds its annual cookie sale starting at 9 a.m. at 5821 John Ave. Homemade cookies are available in one-, two- and three-dozen prepackaged trays.

Maple: Santa and Mrs. Claus will be at Maple Hill Feed and Farm from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Kids can tell them what they want for Christmas and get a picture taken with the couple. Cookies and coffee will be available.
