Community celebrates local law enforcement at Richmond Police Department Appreciation Day

Dec. 3—Sierra Marling

This year's Richmond Police Department Appreciation Day featured plenty of smiles and laughter as organizers celebrated local law enforcement.

On Thursday, every RPD officer was given an envelope full of coupons from contributing local businesses as a thank you for their service to the community.

In addition to the coupons, a few big-ticket items were won through random drawing. Those items included University of Kentucky and Cincinnati Reds tickets, a day at Kings Island, a smart TV, a laptop, a trip to Gatlinburg, a trip to Las Vegas, and a trip to Panama City.

Eastern Kentucky University fraternity Sigma Alpha Epsilon (SAE) helped organizers with the event this year, and will be taking the lead of the annual celebration after this year. The fraternity may also receive help from an EKU sorority in the future. Representatives of the fraternity drew the winning numbers for big-tickets prizes this year as a way to pass the torch.

The annual RPD Appreciation Day tradition began in 2015 after the tragic death of RPD officer Daniel Ellis, who was shot in the line of duty.

"I thought that tradition might just be a one-year deal. This is the eighth annual event now, and it continues to grow. It just shows the support that the community of Richmond has for their police department," Organizer Steve Rosenberg said on Thursday.
