DOVER — On Monday, Jan. 30 at 3:30 p.m. at the Dover Public Library. Have you ever wanted to learn how to start and use a Bullet Journal? This class is for you. We'll cover the basics of what a Bullet Journal is, how to use one, and how to make it truly yours. Notebooks, markers, washi tape, and all the supplies you need will be included. If you have a special notebook you'd like to use, feel free to bring it along. No experience necessary. Ages 12 and up welcome at this program. Sign up is needed.

Adult Knitting Group

DOVER — On Wednesday, Feb. 1 at 9:30 a.m. knitters and crocheters are welcome at the Dover Public Library's Makerspace with their projects for an in-person crafting circle. All levels are welcome.

Girl Scouts seek new members

Girls in grades K-3 and a caregiver are invited to learn about opportunities to get involved in Girl Scouts at the following events:

  • Wednesday, Feb. 1, from 6 to 7 p.m. at Middleton Elementary School in the gym, 116 Kings Highway, Middleton. This event is a special unicorn party.

  • Thursday, Feb. 2, from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Dover Public Library, 73 Locust St., Dover.

  • Friday, Feb. 3, from 6 to 7 p.m. at First Parish United Church, 176 W. High St., Somersworth. This event is a special unicorn party.

You can also join anytime at girlscoutsgwm.org. Walk-ins are welcome.

Forest Society hosts Community Celebration and Hike

ROCHESTER — The Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests is celebrating the protection of 122 acres of forestland and wetlands, adjacent to the existing 185-acre William H. Champlin, Jr. Forest, in Rochester. Join the Forest Society for remarks from local leaders On Friday Feb. 3 at 1 p.m. at Champlin Forest, Route 108, Rochester, across from Skyhaven Airport, to commemorate the occasion and for a hike at 1:30 p.m. on the now 300-acre reservation.

Community Chess

DOVER — Dover High School presents Community Chess on Saturday, Feb. 4 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Dover High School Town Square. Boards/pieces provided, but if possible, bring your own set. All abilities are welcome. Learn to play lessons held at 10 a.m., 11 a.m. and 12 p.m. Open to Elementary and Middle school students. There will be prizes, raffles, refreshments and food. The cost is free but donations are encouraged to benefit Dover High School Chess Club.

Take Your Child to the Library Day

DOVER — On Saturday, Feb. 4 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. celebrate Take Your Child to the Library Day by taking your kids on a trip to Dover Public Library. We’ll have drop-in crafts and activities in the Children’s Room all day. Sign your child up for a library card and they will be entered into a raffle for a special prize! Anyone five years or older is eligible for a card. Free cards are available to those who live or go to school in Dover.

PORTSMOUTH — The Black Heritage Trail of NH presents "Before European Contact: Changing the Ways We Present Our History,” the first of the 2023 Elinor Williams Hooker Tea Talks on Sunday, Feb. 5, at 2 p.m.  This hybrid program and will be presented in person, at the Portsmouth Public Library located at 175 Parrott Avenue and will be simultaneously available online.

We will hear from panelists Kabria Baumgartner, Dean's Associate Professor of History and Africana Studies at Northeastern University, Anne Jennison from the New Hampshire Commission on Native American Affairs, and Akeia de Borros Gomes, Sr. Curator of Maritime Social Histories at the Mystic Seaport Museum. This panel will be moderated by Meghan Howey, Interim Director for the Center for the Humanities at UNH.

ARA presents ‘A Look at the History of New Hampshire’s Poor Houses’

DURHAM — The Active Retirement Association announces a free Zoom presentation on Feb. 6, from 1:30 to 3 p.m. featuring Stephen Taylor, who will speak about New Hampshire’s historical treatment of its poorest citizens. He will discuss how vague laws and compulsory taxes in colonial times led to the creation of alms houses and poor farms in many New Hampshire towns where the poor were subjected to horrid conditions.
