Community Chorus at South Berwick performs at Carnegie Hall

SOUTH BERWICK - Performing at Carnegie Hall – a dream for many aspiring musicians – became a reality this past June for 16 members of The Community Chorus at South Berwick. Under the direction of CCSB’s Dr. Nicolas Dosman, their voices joined with others to create the 120-member National Opera Chorus.

Originally scheduled for May 2020, the Carnegie performance entitled “Forever Music” had to be postponed due to the pandemic. Finally, when it was deemed safe to proceed, rehearsals began in March for a stellar evening of opera. The program was headlined by luminary operatic soloists and included pieces from Rossini, Donizetti, Bizet, Scott Joplin, and was capped off by a stunning performance of “Make Our Garden Grow” from Bernstein’s “Candide."

With the dream of Carnegie realized, CCSB is now focusing on its upcoming season. The first rehearsal will be held Monday, Sept. 12 at 7 p.m. at the First Federated Parish Church in South Berwick. CCSB extends an invitation to all Seacoast area singers to join them as they prepare for their annual Holiday Concert which will feature both Pinkham’s Christmas Cantata and Leroy Anderson’s “Christmas Festival”.

While the pandemic made singing as a group challenging, CCSB managed to continue through it with Zoom rehearsals, outdoor rehearsals, and masked rehearsals. As they look forward to the coming season, they will continue to follow common sense COVID-19 protective measures while rehearsing and performing.
