Community donations help Friends of the Library fund programs

It’s almost 2022!

If you’re thinking about year-end giving, consider Carlsbad Public Library. There are several ways you can support the library’s goal of bringing up-to-date library services and materials to everybody in our community. Here are a few quick ideas to get involved:

One easy way to help is to donate your gently-used books, DVDs, or magazines. The library has a long history of accepting used books as donations. These items may or may not find their way to the library shelves after you donate. For example, books with older copyrights or a lot of wear-and-tear probably will not go into the collection. However, the Friends of the Library volunteer group still has a use for these older, slightly-used books.

Each year, the Friends hosts a used book sale to raise money for popular programs such as the library’s annual summer reading program. Donations from members of the public are a main source of these used books that are offered for sale. Funds from the annual book sale help pay for a variety of library needs. They may be used to pay performers to come and put on educational or entertaining programs at the library for patrons to enjoy at no charge, provide extra materials for children’s activities and art projects, or to help buy supplies for take-home kits.

A second way to help the library is to donate funds for the library to purchase a book or books in memory of a love one. A memorial book donation is a wonderful way to commemorate a special person. If you’ve ever checked out a library book with a commemorative bookplate, it was because someone chose to remember a friend or family member by donating that book for others to enjoy.

If you’d like to make a memorial donation, you can speak with the library director about what types of books or materials the library needs, and suggest what types of material you think would best honor the person you wish remember. We will be happy to include a bookplate with your name as the donor and the name of the person you wish to memorialize. (Please remember that materials donated to the library do get used, and eventually a gift book may wear out and need to be discarded.)

Finally, general financial donations are also welcome. The library has two different ways to accept monetary donations. The first is to make a donation to the Carlsbad Foundation’s library endowment fund. The library can use this fund to purchase needed books or materials for the collection. A second way to donate funds to the library is through the Friends of the Library organization.

Speaking of the Friends of the Library, the Friends welcomes volunteers and holds meetings at the library the first Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m. If you’d like to find out more about the organization, contact the library at 885-6776 for details.

Library donations are tax deductible, so if you would like a receipt for your donations of any type, please ask. Donations become the property of the library and cannot be accepted with any conditions attached. In some cases, we may share donated books with other non-profit agencies who need materials, such as schools or other libraries.

If you would like to drop off books you no longer need, and don’t require a receipt, please feel free to do so at any time in the blue donation bin behind the library.
