Community Foundation awards $56K in grants to 16 Somerset County groups. Here's the list.

The Community Foundation for the Alleghenies has awarded a total of $56,449 in grants to 16 Somerset County organizations this season.

They were part of the foundation's 2022 spring grant round distribution in support of activities benefitting the community through the arts, education, human services and public safety. A total of 63 grants were awarded, totaling more than $200,000 to organizations in Bedford, Cambria and Somerset counties. The grants were announced May 2 at Greater Johnstown School District, one of the Cambria County recipients.

The Somerset County organizations that received funding during the 2022 spring grant round are as follows:

  • Bakersville Volunteer Fire Department: $5,000 to replace a thermal image camera.

  • Confluence Creative Arts Center: $4,000 for its EcoArt Camp.

  • Historical and Genealogical Society of Somerset County: $4,000 for a Wood-Mizer logs to lumber and staves project.

  • Hooversville Volunteer Fire Department: $3,400 for structural turnout gear.

  • Laurel Arts: $1,000 for its "LA Nights" community outdoor music series.

  • Laurel Trinity Church: $1,000 for its "Building Our Community" project.

  • Mary S. Biesecker Public Library: $4,000 for upgrades to its genealogy section, children's library and outdoor area.

  • The Meyersdale Area School District received four grants: $614.98 for outdoor exercise equipment, $585.02 for magnetic letters/boards, $253 for its clothing closet and $96 for its Quizizz Super Account.

  • Meyersdale Renaissance Inc.: $5,000 to offer portable movies for free family entertainment.

  • Next Step Center Inc.: $5,000 for its Transitions program.

  • Somerset County Library: $2,000 for a "Drone Designers: Exploring STEAM Careers" education project.

  • Somerset County Mobile Food Bank: $5,000 for its Feeding Our Neighbors project.

  • Stonycreek-Quemahoning Initiative: $7,500 for work on another phase of the Quemahoning Trails project.

  • Salvation Army, Somerset: $3,000 for a back-to-school assistance program.

  • Windber Public Library Association: $3,000 for its Building Better Communities Through Books project.

  • YWCA of Greater Johnstown: $2,000 for a sensory table and chairs at the YWCA's Kuddle Corner in Windber.

Multi-county grants

In addition, grants totaling $23,500 were awarded to six recipients for programs that benefit a multi-county area:

  • Alleghenies Unlimited Care Providers: $2,500 for its Ability Works "Soldier Care Package" project.

  • Highlands Health medical clinic: $7,500 for clinic sustainability.

  • Johnstown Symphony Orchestra: $2,000 for its "JSO on the Go" educational ensembles program.

  • Mount Aloysius College: $2,500 for its summer health care camp.

  • The Learning Lamp: $5,000 for a multimedia regional early childhood education workforce recruitment project.

  • United Way of the Laurel Highlands: $4,000 for its diaper donation project.
