Community Foundation welcomes new leadership, announces successful fundraising effort

HOLLAND — The Community Foundation of the Holland/Zeeland Area recently welcomed new leadership and celebrated a successful fundraising effort to support local nonprofits.

During an annual luncheon in late May, CFHZ officially welcomed Patrick Cisler as its new president and CEO. Cisler was announced as the organization’s next leader in March. He takes over for Mike Goorhouse, who led CFHZ since 2014.

“As someone who grew up in this community, it is truly a privilege to now be leading one of its finest organizations and continuing to build upon the excellent work of my predecessors,” Cisler said during the luncheon. “I hope to push the foundation during my time here to think about not just how we invest in buildings and organizations and programs, but how we invest in the social connection between people.”

CFHZ also has new leadership on its board of trustees. Three new members were recently elected to the board — Tim Hemingway, Micki Janssen and Rogen McLean.

Hemingway, a longtime Holland resident, held various executive leadership roles during a three-decade career with SAF Holland. He’s been on several local boards, including Holland BPW, the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Holland and Holland Aquatic Center.

Janssen was born and raised in Zeeland. She was an elementary school teacher for 32 years and has served on boards for Resthaven and the Outdoor Discovery Center.

McLean will serve a one-year term as a Youth Trustee and will chair the Youth Advisory Committee. She will be a senior at West Ottawa this fall and has been on the YAC since her sophomore year.

Tom Den Herder was also selected as the board’s chair, succeeding Diane Kooiker. Erin Avery Zylman will serve as chair elect, Jasmine Irish will serve as secretary and Scott Brooks will be treasurer.

Foundation staff also announced the conclusion of the "Strengthening the Nonprofit Sector Campaign," which was launched in the spring of 2022 and raised $1.7 million.

So far, funds have been used for leadership development programs, as well as program and operating support for the Lakeshore Nonprofit Alliance and Community SPOKE.

A technical assistance fund will be launched in the fall.

“The past few years provided a living case study which demonstrated the importance of our nonprofits having the support and resources they need to continue to collaborate, innovate and respond to increasingly complex challenges,” Colleen Hill, vice president of development and donor services at CFHZ, wrote in a statement.

“The generous support of local donors to the SNS Campaign means we can meaningfully increase our investment in the health and strength of nonprofit organizations and our commitment to creating a fully thriving community for all.”
