Community organizations come together to host Afghan Family Day

Several organizations came together on Saturday to celebrate an Afghan family welcome event at the headquarters of Project 658 in east Charlotte.

The goal of the event is to connect the immigrant and refugee families to each other and to community resources they can access in the Queen City.

This is the second event held by the organizations to specifically help Afghan refugees know that they are not alone and they have a community willing to help them.

Families were able to pick up necessities like fruit and dry goods as well as get assistance on how to register for local schools and affordable housing.

Mark London with Project 658 said it’s important for the close to 150 people who attended the event to understand that they are wanted in the community and have a way to be connected.

“We want them connected to both the wider community in general, but also (to have) the immigrant refugee community unity so they they don’t feel isolated,” said London

The family day was part of “Love Week” for Elevation Church, where members focus on giving back and serving others.
