Community organizer files to run for Sioux Falls City Council seat being vacated by Jensen

A Sioux Falls community organizer is the latest candidate to say they'll be running for Sioux Falls City Council this April.

Jordan Deffenbaugh filed paperwork on Monday afternoon stating his intent to run for the At-Large C seat, where Councilor Alex Jensen has announced he will not be seeking re-election.

A release from Deffenbaugh announcing his campaign says he seeks to "revitalize the city and put power back into the hands of core neighborhoods," citing the ideas of the non-profit organization Strong Towns.

He also said he'd like to repeal ordinances in the city that "burden taxpayers and hinder local development."

Deffenbaugh currently serves as a partnership developer for the Beverly Ann Miller Institute and community liaison for Whittier's Community Revitalization Collective, and has organized projects including the Sioux Falls Tool Library and Union Gospel Mission Preservation Kitchen.

Deffenbaugh is the second person to express interest in running for the seat. Richard Thomason, a former state representative, filed to run earlier this month, and received Jensen's endorsement to replace him on the council.

Election day is April 9, 2024.
