Community places hearts out for Officer Gilmartin

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A community in Lackawanna County came together this afternoon for a kind gesture and to help out a local police officer hurt in the line of duty.

It’s the season of love and the love continues to be shown to a local officer.

The public was invited to the Garden of Cedar Sunday afternoon in the Electric City to write Valentines in support of Officer Kyle Gilmartin.

Preparing for the big game

Gilmartin was shot in the line of duty in January from what police describe as gang activity.

The Garden on Cedar Street had almost 2,000 hearts ahead of Valentine’s Day and organizers were also taking cash donations to give to the Gilmartin family to help with rehabilitation costs.

“Getting several hearts expressed to Officer Gilmartin, who was tragically shot about a month ago, and some hearts started coming in expressing good wishes and goodwill towards Officer Gilmartin for a speedy recovery and we decided that we would plant them in a specific area and the response has been phenomenal” explained Frank Dubas the organizer.

Next week people can come by the garden and pick up their hearts to keep.
