Community raises more than $147,500 for family of shooting victim

A fundraiser created to help the family of a man who died from a shooting Sunday evening has raised more than $147,500, as of Friday.

Akhil Sai Mahankali, 25, died from his gunshot wound after police and fire medics found him in the 3200 block of Eastern Boulevard. They took him to the hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.

After his death, his cousin Sree Lekha Kolluru and friend Ram Sai Induri set up a GoFundMe page for Mahankali's family, who live in India.

"Akhil is very bright student who is very responsible from his childhood," according to his GoFundMe page.

He supported his family monetarily. Mahankali's family has been unable to afford to send his body back to India. Kolluru and Induri hoped to raise $150,000, in part, to repatriate his body.

Mahankali's father is Uma Shankar, and his mother is Madhavi Shankar.

"His family have their entire world turned upside down by what happened to Akhil," according to the fundraiser introduction.

The family sent Mahankali to the United States by taking out a large loan. The money from the GoFundMe will also be used to pay off the loan.

"Akhil came to USA with the dream of bright career and to fulfill all his responsibilities as elder son of the family," according to the GoFundMe.

Officers have charged Raviteja Goli with manslaughter in connection with Mahankali's death. He is now in the Montgomery jail, according to a press release from the police.
