Community raises nearly $40K for only survivor of Ga. family involved in boat crash that killed 5

Family members have set up a GoFundMe for the only member of a Georgia family who survived a boat crash that killed four people.

The crash happened Saturday morning on the Wilmington River. Officials said a total of five people were killed and four injured when two boats collided head on. The driver of one of the boats was arrested for boating under the influence.

Four people killed in the crash, Chris and Lori Leffler and their sons Zach (23) and Nate (17) were among the victims. The couple’s daughter, Katie Leffler, was also onboard and sustained minor injuries. A friend of Katie Leffler’s also survived.

The community has now raised more than $33,000 for Katie Leffler to help pay her expenses.

Family members said she is finishing up her undergraduate degree and had plans to go on to receive a master’s degree. According to her Linkedin profile, Katie attends Purdue University in Indiana, where she is studying history.

Chris Leffler was a beloved history teacher at Calvary Day School, a private Christian school in Savannah. He had previously taught at King’s Ridge Christian School in Alpharetta. The family had recently moved to the Savannah area.

“Our family thanks you all for your love and support during this tragic time,” Robin Robinson, who set up the GoFundMe, said. “Katie has requested that her and her family’s privacy be respected at this very difficult time. Your well wishes and kind words are appreciated.”

King’s Ridge is hosting a vigil for the family on Tuesday night in honor of the victims and to pray for healing for Katie.
