United Way holds Day of Caring in Sandusky County

FREMONT - Volunteers were out in full force on Nov. 3 for the first United Way of Sandusky County Day of Caring event.

This year’s Day of Caring saw volunteers paired with Fremont area seniors in need of assistance to have their yards raked. In a single day, 34 volunteers came out and raked yards for 16 Fremont area seniors, giving a total of 106 hours worked.

Volunteers signed up for either a two-hour or four-hour shift and were divided into groups and assigned yards. Several area businesses were represented with volunteers including Croghan Colonial Bank, First National Bank of Bellevue, and the Rehmann Financial Group.

Students from the Fremont Ross Teen Leadership Corps took advantage of their day off school and decided to make a difference by volunteering for several hours in the morning.

Rachel McCoy, marketing and events coordinator at United Way, spoke to seniors as they called in to register and knew right away this project was going to make a difference. “It was so rewarding getting to speak with these seniors and their family members and hear just how grateful they were. Many expressed that without the help of volunteers they weren’t sure how or if the leaves would get raked” McCoy said.

Volunteering wasn’t the only way to participate in United Way’s Day of Caring. Biggby Coffee–Fremont offered the community another way to give back to the community by hosting a fundraiser for United Way during the same week as Day of Caring.
