Legandos, PC Elks donate books to Bataan's Fourth Grade

PORT CLINTON - Grade four students at Bataan Memorial Intermediate are excited to read “Journal for Young Leaders” by Tony and Sandy Legando.  Thanks to the support of Port Clinton Elk’s Lodge 1718, the entire fourth grade at Bataan Memorial Intermediate will be receiving the Legandos' book.  Along with the Legandos, Port Clinton Elks leaders Bill Murphy, Exalted Ruler, and Marv Solomon, Esquire, presented the donation to the grade four teachers and Geoff Halsey, principal.

Dramatic reading of 'The Tempest' to be performed at Hayes

FREMONT – Enjoy a dramatic reading of a Shakespeare classic comedy that involves a storm, shipwreck and its survivors on Sunday at the Hayes Presidential Library and Museums.

Local actors will perform a reading of “The Tempest” at 2 p.m. in the museum auditorium.

This performance was initially offered to Hayes Presidential Library and Museums members but has been opened up to the public, as well. Seating is limited, and tickets are required.

Tickets, free for Hayes Presidential members and $5 for non-members, are available at rbhayes.org/news/2023/04/13/general/dramatic-reading-of-shakespeare-s-the-tempest-to-be-performed-at-hayes-presidential.

They will also be sold at the museum front desk the day of the event, pending availability.

Historic Shakespeare books that belonged to the Hayes family and are part of the Hayes Presidential Library collections will also be on display at the event.

The reading of “The Tempest” is a precursor to Shakespeare in the Grove, performances of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” at 7 p.m. Aug. 11, and Aug. 12, as well as 2 p.m. Aug. 13. Shakespeare in the Grove events will take place on the Hayes Home verandah and are free.

Hayes Presidential is America’s first presidential library and the forerunner of the federal presidential library system. It is partially funded by the state of Ohio and affiliated with the Ohio History Connection. Hayes Presidential is at Spiegel Grove at the corner of Hayes and Buckland avenues.

Ottawa County Health Department to hold Community Day

OAK HARBOR - The Ottawa County Health Department has announced Ottawa County Community Day will be held on May 12. This community day will feature several local agencies offering a number of different resources.

These agencies will be available to link and refer individuals to local services. This will include activities centered around the eight dimensions of health, guest speakers sharing experiences of mental health and recovery stories, giveaways and raffle prizes will be available for participants, and experts will be available to answer questions about where to obtain specific services right here in Ottawa County.

This event will take place from noon to 6 p.m. at the Joyful Connections building, 8200 W. Ohio 163. OCTA will be offering transportation to the event, call at least one week in advance to schedule. Parking will be available on-site and at the adjacent Job and Family Services building.

PCHS announces 2023 Alumni Hall of Fame Inductee

PORT CLINTON - The Port Clinton High School Alumni Hall of Fame announced the 2023 inductee is Dr. Jennifer Willford.  Willford will join the elite group of Port Clinton High School alumni recognized for their outstanding academic achievement and contributions in their field.  The induction will take place during the Rotary Honors Banquet at Port Clinton High School on May 3.

Willford is a Professor of Psychology at Slippery Rock University.  This 1988 graduate of Port Clinton High School began her extensive academic resume at Muskingham University with a Bachelors in Neuroscience. She earned her doctorate degree in Experimental Psychology at the University of Kentucky, completed a post-doctoral fellowship in Psychiatric Epidemiology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, and served as research faculty in the department of Psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine for twelve years. Her primary area of research is the impact of prenatal drug exposure on brain development and neuropsychological outcomes including cognition and emotion regulation.

Her work includes over 25 peer-reviewed publications, six book chapters, 130 professional presentations, and multiple grant awards. She is currently co-writing a textbook on Resilience Across the Lifespan. She recently served as President of the Developmental Neurotoxicology Society, navigating the society through the pandemic. Currently in her tenth year at SRU, she serves as the Associate Director of the Honor’s College and developed and directs Neuroscience and Pre-professional Studies programs in Psychology.

Willford will meet with students prior to her induction during PCHS science classes.
