Blakeman to present 'Ohio Prairie Story'

BELLEVUE — At 2 p.m. Sunday, Historic Lyme Village will host a program titled “The Ohio Prairie Story” presented by John Blakeman.

Blakeman is a retired biology instructor and is an experienced Ohio prairie researcher. He planted one of Ohio’s first prairie restorations in Erie County in 1973 at Firelands College BGSU at Huron, using native prairie seeds collected from local prairie remnants and isolated plants in ditches and hedgerows.

He helped form the Ohio Prairie Association and served as its president. He has presented papers at both state and national prairie conferences and is regarded as an expert in the history of Ohio’s tallgrass prairies.

He professionally designs, installs, and maintains prairie restoration and landscapes at park, educational, and private sites, including Erie MetroParks facilities, the COSI museum in Columbus, and at commercial sites across Ohio.

His presentation, a digital slide show, will tell about Ohio’s natural prairies, including those originally in the Lyme Village area. He will also tell how prairie plants can be installed at Lyme Village, to provide beautiful, natural examples of the native prairie landscapes of the region.

This program is open to the public and there is no charge to learn more about these wonderful prairies. Contact Lyme Village at 419-483-4949 with any questions.
