Meals on Wheels served 469 seniors in 2022

The Great Lakes Community Action Partnership (GLCAP) Meals on Wheels program provided nutrition to 469 Sandusky County senior residents in 2022, making for a total of 61,568 meals served.

The program provides home-delivered lunches Monday through Thursday for eligible homebound seniors ages 60 and older. While seniors are welcome to make donations for meals, the program serves all eligible seniors, regardless of their ability to afford the cost of meals.

“We are committed to serving all seniors who qualify for Meals on Wheels,” Senior Services Director Robin Richter said.

Along with providing meals, the regular weekday visits from Meals on Wheels drivers helps ensure that clients are safe and healthy while in their homes. If a client does not come to the door as expected during a driver’s regular visit, the driver can notify the family to check and see if assistance is needed.

In recent years, GLCAP Senior Services has also expanded its virtual programs for seniors, offering book clubs, art classes, wellness courses, and other activities that seniors may join from the comfort of their homes. These programs are offered to all seniors — including those in the Meals on Wheels program — and help participants stay connected to one another and the community.

“Whether they are a Meals on Wheels participant or a regular guest at one of our senior centers, we want to make sure that every senior is included in our programs,” Richter said.

CMP welcomes Maj. Gen. Munera as guest speaker

PORT CLINTON - On Saturday, the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) will host the JROTC Three-Position National Championships awards ceremony — recognizing the top sporter and precision air rifle JROTC teams and individuals from across the country.

The match is set to be held Thursday through Saturday at the Gary Anderson CMP Competition Center on the grounds of Camp Perry in Port Clinton, Ohio. The National Championship is the culminating event of a junior air rifle series that began in September with more than 6,000 junior cadets who competed in the Postal Championships before moving on to Regional Service Championships in February. Leading individuals and teams from the 900 athletes who competed in the regional events were invited to move on to the two-day competition in Ohio, where winners will be crowned National Champions.

The JROTC awards ceremony, a formal occasion to celebrate the hard work of the 225 young cadets who made it to the national event, will be held at Kalahari Resorts Convention Center in nearby Sandusky. Along with dinner and awards, those in attendance will be addressed by special guest speaker, Major General Antonio Munera.

Maj. Gen. Munera has accumulated a successful military career that has spanned more than 30 years.

DeWine, Norfolk Southern announce First Responders Training Center to be located in Ohio

COLUMBUS - Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine announced that Norfolk Southern Corporation has agreed to his idea to improve and expand firefighter training by creating a new first responders training center and expanding its Operation Awareness and Response (OAR) program, which travels the company’s 22-state network and trains first responders on how to respond safely to rail incidents.

The location of the center will be decided in partnership with community leaders. Until a proper location is identified, training classes will commence on Wednesday at Norfolk Southern’s Moorman Yard in Bellevue.

The new safety training center’s mission will be focused on providing additional, free training for first responders across the region, including Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. This effort will also strengthen coordination between railroads and first responders in the event of an emergency response.“The derailment in East Palestine made clear that ensuring first responders are prepared for disasters involving hazardous materials is vitally important to the safety of communities,” DeWine said. “Often first responders are volunteers, and their need to have the most up-to-date training and equipment is essential. Today’s commitment by Norfolk Southern is an important next step in the company’s commitment to make the citizens of Ohio and of East Palestine whole after the recent derailment, a commitment Ohio will continue to monitor closely.”“These commitments are the direct result of my conversations with Governor DeWine and other leaders of community programs all to better support our first responders and their communities," said Norfolk Southern President and CEO Alan H. Shaw. "First responders are often immediately on the scene of a rail incident and we want to ensure they have the knowledge and tools to work safely and effectively to protect the health and safety of their fellow citizens.”
