Top spellers named at Port Clinton Middle School

PORT CLINTON - The top spellers at Port Clinton Middle School participated in the spelling bee on Jan. 31.

Students participating in the bee had the top scores in their language arts classrooms in grades six to eight. Spelling bee winners were first, Shantha Weit; second, Nayellie Fritz; and third, Maxon Fluckinger.

Other top spellers participating in the Port Clinton Middle School Spelling Bee were: Fleet 6 — Calleigh Fought, Isabella Hill, Griffin Miller and Susannah Osborne; Fleet 7 — Alexander DeFreitas, Parker Howard, Makenzee Jadwisiak and Jaelynn Mazur; Fleet 8 — Conner Cochran, Gabriel Depner, Keira Kilgallon, Shadon Pollard and Anaiya Parriott.

The top three spellers from the PCMS bee will compete in The Blade Regional Championship Spelling Bee.

New visitor center, gift shop at Magee Marsh seeks volunteers

PORT CLINTON - The Sportsmen’s Migratory Bird Center was built in 1970. Since June 2022, the building has been getting a total transformation and is scheduled to open in April. Visitors will see a whole new look and feel as they walk through the front door, which is framed in large glass windows.

Inside, new displays, exhibits and new restrooms have been installed. Visitors will have access to the upstairs and this space will focus on the hunting tradition at Magee Marsh. An exact opening date will be announced soon and will be posted on the Friends of Magee Marsh Facebook page.

The Friends of Magee Marsh will have a brand new gift shop within the Magee Marsh Visitor Center. The group is recruiting volunteers to help in the gift shop. Volunteers will meet visitors from all over the world. The gift shop will be open April though October. An information session for anyone interested in volunteering will be at 1 p.m. March 25 at the Ida Rupp Library in Port Clinton. To register, email Mary Warren at windbird@bex.net.

Inaugural ball to honor President Hayes planned for March

FREMONT – When President Hayes took office in March 1877, he did not have an inaugural ball.

His election was — and remains — one of the most contested in U.S. history, so a ball was not included in the inaugural festivities. As part of Hayes’ 200th birthday celebration, the Hayes Presidential Libraryand Museums will have an inaugural ball on March 4 at the Neeley Center at Terra State Community College.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m. with the program beginning around 6:15 p.m. The Neeley Center is at 2830 Napoleon Road.

Advance tickets are required. Tickets are $50 for Hayes Presidential members and $55 for non-members. They are available online at https://www.rbhayes.org/events/2023/03/04/events/inaugural-ball-for-president-rutherford-b.-hayes/.

The Cottonwood Jam String Band will provide music, and a caller will guide guests through 19th-century contra dancing, which was popular during Hayes’ time.

On the menu are chicken breast, two sides, salad, rolls, dessert and coffee, water and lemonade. A vegan option will be available. Those who would like the vegan option or who have any dietary restrictions are asked to contact Crystal Johnson, visitor services manager, at 419-332-2081 or cjohnson@rbhayes.org in advance of the event.Beer and wine will be available. Tickets include one drink of beer or wine. Additional beer and wine drinks can be purchased with cash.

The dress code is flexible. Guests are welcome to wear business casual, formal wear or period costumes.The ball is part of President Hayes’ 200th Birthday Celebration, sponsored by Croghan Colonial Bank.

Hayes Presidential is America’s first presidential library and the forerunner of the federal presidential library system. It is partially funded by the state of Ohio and affiliated with the Ohio History Connection. Hayes Presidential is at Spiegel Grove at the corner of Hayes and Buckland avenues.
