Community-supported agriculture association topic for HCE

LONG POINT — The Long Point Home and Community Education group met April 20 at the home of Linda Zavada. Ten members were present.

Discussion was held about Carroll's Timber Edge Farm, a local community-supported agriculture association. These types of "truck farms" allow area people to obtain fresh, quality farm and garden produce in season.

Arlene Martel, county president, announced that HCE will again help with the Livingston County's 4H Fair this summer. Long Point's day is on Thursday, July 21, from 8 a.m.-8 p.m.

The county HCE groups will again compile themed baskets to be raffled. After some brainstorming, the Long Point group decided on the theme of "back to nature" for our basket, which will consist of various natural foods and products. Members were also reminded that there is a $1,000 scholarship available to any high school senior who resides in Livingston County.

Linda DeRosa announced that the Long Point American Legion will have a pork chop dinner at the Legion Hall on May 5 from 4:30-7:30 p.m. Dine in or carry outs are available. DeRosa also reminded members that Engel Lane Theater will be presenting plays and musicals during this summer season.

Jean Gaspardo announced that the Long Point Lions Club will be helping the Long Point Village Board with a fundraiser to tuck-point the historic bandstand in the park. This work will be completed before the summer of 2023 when Long Point celebrates its sesquicentennial.

Arlene Martell gave the lesson "Modern Trends in Textiles and Clothing," a brief history of how all-natural textiles, such as cotton, wool and silk have been joined by many synthetic fabrics in the past seventy years.

This meeting, Long Point's only fundraiser for the year, also included a silent auction. Linda Zavada, hostess, served lunch, and Sharon Loudon won the door prize.
