Jul. 7—"Weston Illustrated — Penned, Painted and Sculpted" is the story of influential artists between 1919-1965 and their connection to both the locals and locale of Weston.

Explore pieces on loan from the Friends of the James Daugherty Foundation, the Jenny Moore Collection, Westport Public Art Collection, Weston Public Library, Wilton Historical Society and WHCC's collection. Children can try their hand at cartooning and drawing in the Young Artists Art Corner.

The exhibit runs until Feb. 25 and is open from 1 to 4 p.m. every Sunday and Thursday. It is also open by appointment. Admission is free to Weston History & Culture Center members, $5 for adult general admission and $3 for child general admission. Tickets at the door.

The Weston History & Culture Center is participating in the 2023 CT Summer at the Museum program. The program invites Connecticut children ages 18 and under plus one accompanying Connecticut resident adult to visit the exhibits for free Sundays and Thursdays, July 6 to Aug. 31.

Parking and entrance accessed on High Acre Road. Parking is available on site. Check in and/or buy tickets in the visitor's center in the red building adjacent to parking lot.

'Grey's Anatomy' actress among playhouse cast

Kate Burton, an Emmy-winning actress who is on "Grey's Anatomy" is part of the Westport Country Playhouse's new stage adaptation of "Dial M for Murder," which runs July 11 through 29. The five-member cast includes Burton as Inspector Hubbard, Patrick Andrews as Tony Wendice, Kate Abbruzzese as Margot Wendice, Krystel Lucas will play Maxine Hadley and Denver Milord will play Lesgate.

The show is adapted by Jeffrey Hatcher, from the original play by Frederick Knott, and directed by Mark Lamos, the playhouse's artistic director.

"Dial M for Murder" follows a devious husband, his wealthy wife and her lover. The new version offers more surprises and diabolic twists than the Hitchcock film.

Performances are Tuesdays at 7 p.m., Wednesdays at 2 and 7 p.m., Thursdays at 7 p.m., Fridays at 8 p.m., Saturdays at 3 and 8 p.m. and Sundays at 3 p.m. There are no Wednesday or Saturday matinees during preview week of July 11 to 14.

There are also special series nights with Taste of Tuesdays on July 11, Pride Night on July 13, Black Excellence Night on July 14, Opening Night on July 15, the Sunday Symposium with playwright Jeffrey Hatcher on July 16, Open Captions on July 23, Backstage Pass on July 26 and Thursday TalkBack on July 27. The Playhouse has teamed up with local restaurant partners to offer specialty cocktails to celebrate the show during its run.

The play is recommended for age 12 and older. Running time is approximately two hours with one intermission.

Playhouse hosts mystery author discussion

Westport Country Playhouse will host "Summer Thrillers: A Mystery Author Discussion," featuring three authors of different mystery novel genres, at 2 p.m. on July 9 in the Lucille Lortel White Barn, adjacent to the theater. The discussion will be moderated by Kelle Ruden.

To celebrate the upcoming run of the Playhouse's "Dial M for Murder," mystery authors Christin Brecher, Edwin Hill and Andrea Penrose will team up to discuss the different aspects of the mystery genre and what makes mysteries so popular.

Brecher will discuss "Photo Finished," Hill will discuss his thriller, "The Secrets We Share," and Penrose will talk about her Regency-era historical mystery, "Murder at the Serpentine Bridge."

Ruden was the manager and editor of the Discover Great New Writers program at Barnes & Noble, marketing director at Random House Publishing Group and program director at the Westport Library from 2013 to 2016.

Following an audience question-and-answer session with the authors, books will be on sale through RJ Julia Booksellers of Madison, with authors available for signing.

Westport VFW to host BBQ

Spacecat Brewing will be presenting the Westport VFW BBQ on July 22. The event, featuring smoked brisket, ribs, pulled pork, chicken, chili, coleslaw and corn, will run from 1 to 5 p.m. at the VFW Post 399, 465 Riverside Ave.
