Aug. 11—This collaboration will provide multimedia resources that foster critical thinking and promote ethical and religious values, nurturing the next generation of decision makers and opinion leaders.

Beginning this September, all students and faculty get free digital subscriptions for unlimited access to America's vast repository of stories, podcasts, and videos and look at the latest developments in the church and the world.

The collaboration will also provide enrichment to local churches and offer members of the community a chance to engage with new programming.

Elton John tribute headlines Fairfield U. gala

"Wonderful Crazy Night — The New Elton John Tribute" will headline the Jamie Hulley Arts Foundation's 21st annual Evening for the Arts gala benefit on Sept. 9 at Fairfield University's Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts.

The performance begins at 7:30 p.m. The Evening for the Arts reception and raffle preview begins at 6:30 p.m. Light refreshments will be available. Tickets are $45 in advance or $50 at the door and can be purchased through the Quick Center Box Office at 203-254-4010 or quickcenter.fairfield.edu.

This concert will feature Las Vegas performer and pianist Colte Julian. It will include elaborate costumes and authentic stories inspired by John's career.

The event benefits the Jamie Hulley Arts Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the educational enrichment and professional development of young artists and early career professionals. It was founded to celebrate the life of Jamie Alaine Hulley.

All proceeds from the gala are dedicated to scholarships, educational programs and community project sponsorships throughout Connecticut, especially in New Haven and Fairfield counties. Since the foundation's creation in 2002, more than $1 million has been awarded.

The gala also showcases the talents of performers involved in the foundation's programs at Square Foot Theatre in Wallingford, Amity High School's Creative Theatre, Black Rock Theater in Fairfield and Center Stage Theatre in Shelton.

Beach season coming to an end

Jennings and Penfield Beaches will be staffed with lifeguards daily through Aug. 27. Then again on Labor Day weekend, Sept. 2 to 4.

Sasco, Southport and South Pine Creek beaches will be staffed with lifeguards through Aug. 13. There will be no lifeguards on duty as of Aug. 14.

Lake Mohegan will be staffed with lifeguards daily through Sept. 4.

Deputy fire marshal sworn in

Assistant Chief Patrick Barry was recently sworn in as a deputy fire marshal. Barry successfully completed the Fire Marshal and Fire Investigation certifications.

Police cadets compete this summer

Fairfield sent 16 police cadets and five advisors to the Cadet Police Academy to participate in the annual summer camp. The Fairfield Police Cadets have not only completed their exams but have also graduated from the Cadet Police Academy.

The town recently commended some of those members.

Cadet Captain Alvarez-Whalen won the Captains Award. Cadet Lieutenant Alex von Ehr, was appointed as a lieutenant in the Cadet Police Department. Cadet Sergeant Vincent Travali won the Most Improved Physical Fitness Award. Cadet Caylin McInerny secured first place in felony stops. Cadet Chris Samatar, earned him second place in building searches. Bravo Squad members cadet Karen Moskowitz and Nathan Teed won the marching competition.

Cornhole tournament to benefit Operation Hope

The Fairfield Boys High School Hockey Team has teamed up with Country Cow, Pet Pantry, Ashley Curran Fitness and BRYAC to host an open invitation cornhole tournament with all proceeds benefiting Operation Hope.

The tournament will be at 10 a.m. on Aug. 12. at Jennings Beach.

The team transformed its annual summer fundraiser to fund team activities to a fundraiser to help the community. Two person teams are $50, and winners will receive Country Cow gift baskets and a championship trophy. People can apply online or contact Ryan Flynn at 203-879-1934 for more information.

Food drive to help students

State Sen. Tony Hwang will host a back-to-school food drive on Aug. 26 for food insecurity with Operation Hope.

It will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Sherman Town Green.

Library looking to add mascot

Residents are asked to help the library choose a mascot. The choices include a river otter, red fox, or a cottontail rabbit. Pictures are posted at circulation desks.

People can cast their vote with a circulation department member at the Main Library or Woods Branch and receive a code worth 25 points toward the Summer Reading Challenge.

Voting is open through Aug. 12.

One vote per person.
