Commuter alert: MBTA announces numerous schedule changes for the month of March

The MBTA announced on Tuesday several service changes for the month of March, affecting multiple different lines.

The Red, Mattapan, Orange, and Green Lines as well as the Haverhill and Newburyport/Rockport Commuter Rail lines will all undergo schedule changes. Here is how it will affect your commute:

Red Line

Transit officials are installing a new digital signal system to replace the old analog system. As a result, shuttle buses will replace Red Line service between Harvard and JFK/UMass Stations during the weekends of March 4-5 and March 25-26.

During these weekend closures, the MBTA says free shuttle buses between Harvard and JFK/UMass will make stops at all stations except Park Street and Downtown Crossing.

On the Mattapan Line, evening weekday service changes will take place from March 6 to March 9 to remove a staircase at Milton Station. Service between Mattapan and Ashmont Station will be replaced with shuttle bus service beginning at 9 p.m.

At the end of the month, transit officials say Red Line trains between Braintree and North Quincy Stations will be replaced with shuttle buses from March 20-23 starting at 9 p.m. so crews can perform “critical tamping work along the track in those areas.”

Haverhill Commuter Rail Line

Crews will be performing Automated Train Control (ATC) work between Haverhill and Reading Stations from March 4-12. Trains will be replaced with accessible shuttle bus service during this time period. ATC is a federally mandated safety system that sends signals to trains about potentially unsafe conditions, according to the MBTA.

Orange Line

Continued demolition of the Government Center Garage will result in service changes in the downtown Boston area from March 11-12. Orange Line service will be suspended between Ruggles and North Station during this time. The MBTA says they will use this weekend to perform track work between Back Bay and Ruggles Stations.

Orange Line trains on evening weekdays from March 27-30 will be replaced with shuttle buses starting at 9 p.m. between Wellington and North Stations for track tamping work.

Green Line
