Commuter rail stop at McKalla Station to open for Austin FC’s season opener

AUSTIN (KXAN) – After more than a year of construction, CapMetro announced Thursday it plans to have the new McKalla Station open Saturday, February 24. The commuter rail stop is right in Q2 Stadium’s backyard, where Austin FC plays. Austin FC kicks off its fourth season with its home opener at Q2 Stadium on February 24 against Minnesota United FC.

McKalla Station will join CapMetro’s Red Line, the 32-mile regional rail line extending from Leander to downtown. The stop features two passenger platforms and expanded walking and bike paths connecting the stadium and the surrounding neighborhood.

Currently, Kramer Station — a north Austin station located approximately one mile from the McKalla Station construction site — is the nearest rail stop for Verde fans traveling to Q2 Stadium for matches. Once McKalla and CapMetro’s upcoming Broadmoor Station opens, Kramer will close.
