Commuter train strikes and kills woman in Sumner Friday afternoon, officials say

A pedestrian was struck and killed by a Sounder commuter train in Sumner Friday afternoon.

East Pierce Fire and Rescue was called to the scene at 3:17 p.m., according to Assistant Chief Bill Sandlian.

When fire crews arrived on the scene the commuter train was stopped at Zehnder Street and the conductor was out of the train, Sandlian said. A person’s body was between the two tracks that run through the area. A spokesperson for the City of Sumner said the pedestrian was a woman, believed to be in her mid-30s.

She was declared dead at the scene.

The Sounder train was headed south at the time of the collision and a freight train was headed north on the other track, Sandlian said.
