Let's face it—everyone could use a side hustle to make a little extra cash in their lives. Some people sell their crafts on Etsy or have a dog walking business on the side, but some choose to own and rent out extra property. Owning Airbnbs and apartments is becoming increasingly popular, but it seems like a lot of work—that's why this company is trying to change that.

Rent the Backyard is a San Francisco-based startup that will pretty much build an entire studio apartment in your backyard for you. They'll work with a partner to actually build the structure, finance the construction, list the property, select the tenant, collect the rent and serves as the landlord—all for a stake in unit ownership and 50% of the rent. They'll also handle the permits, the only requirement is that you're located in the Bay Area and have a backyard that's at least 30 feet by 30 feet.

Most homeowners can't afford building an entire apartment in their backyard for themselves to rent out, and that's where Rent the Backyard comes in. “The goal is to have no headaches for the homeowners," co-founder Brian Bakerman told TechCrunch. The company will take care of everything—all you'll have to do is figure out how you'll spend your half of the profit.

The entire apartment is mainly built offsite, so it requires minimal backyard assembly and hassle for the actual homeowner. Also, if you have a friend or family member that's interested in paying rent to live in the studio, Rent the Backyard will let you choose your own tenant.

Although Rent the Backyard hasn't actually built any units yet, they've secured multiple construction partners and are aiming to build 10 structures by the end of this summer.
