‘Complete failure’: CA lawmakers blasts EDD’s verification system

A California lawmaker is blasting the Employment Development Department’s efforts to combat fraud, saying the system the agency deployed has been rejecting legitimate claims. Assemblymember Jim Patterson held a Zoom meeting Thursday to talk about the problems people are having with the ID.me program. Patterson called the implementation of the ID verification program a “complete failure,” and described what’s going on at the EDD as a “rat nest of incompetence.” EDD says the ID.me system was designed not only to prevent fraud, but it was going to speed up the application and approval process for people trying to get unemployment benefits. But Patterson says the system is rejecting people for no reason, and when the person tries to call EDD to figure out why, they can’t get through to anyone to help them. See more in the video above.
