Completion date set for expansion of Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset

SOMERVILLE – Construction of the 78,00-square-foot Orthopedic Center of Excellence at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital (RWJUH) Somerset has reached a milestone with the raising of the final steel beam of the two-story addition.

The addition being built over the hospital's Orthopedics Pavilion and Emergency Department will house 35 private patient rooms and a rehabilitation gym for orthopedic patients.

The addition also includes a 10-room Emergency Department Rapid Decision Unit for patients who require additional observation, helping reduce wait times in the Emergency Department and offering increased comfort for patients and their families.

Construction is expected to be completed in fall 2024.

Signing the final steel beam for the new addition of Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset are Donna Castronovo, vice president, Somerset Health Care Foundation; Patrick Delaney, chief administrative officer, Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset; Bill Arnold, executive vice president, RWJBarnabas Health, president, RWJBarnabas Health Southern Region and president and CEO, Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital; Jack Morris, chairman, Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Board of Directors; and orthopedic surgeon Stephen Kayiaros, medical director, Joint Surgery Program, Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset.

“With this milestone, our steel framework is complete and we are now one step closer to opening a state-of-the-art facility that will offer patients world-class care close to home,” said Patrick Delaney, the hospital's chief administrative officer, in a statement.

The addition is the most significant construction project on the hospital’s Rehill Avenue campus in 16 years.
