CONCACAF Champions League: Atlanta, SKC reach quarters

Atlanta United overturned a two-goal deficit, routing Costa Rica's CS Herediano 4-0 on Thursday in Kennesaw, Ga., to advance to the quarterfinals of the CONCACAF Champions League.

Thanks to two goals from reigning MLS Most Valuable Player Josef Martinez, Atlanta emerged with a 5-3 aggregate victory. Next up, Atlanta United will square off over two legs with Mexico's CF Monterrey, which closed out a 1-0 aggregate win over El Salvador's Alianza FC on Wednesday.

Martinez scored in the first and 63rd minutes, and Atlanta also got goals from Julian Gressel in the ninth minute and Leandro Gonzalez Pirez in the 83rd minute.

Sporting Kansas City 2, Deportivo Toluca 0

Sporting closed out a 5-0 aggregate with a shutout victory in Toluca, Mexico. SKC took the opener 3-0 last week in Kansas City, Kan.

Gerso opened the scoring in the eighth minute. Krisztian Nemeth sealed the result by converting a penalty kick in the 62nd minute after Toluca's Adrian Mora was red-carded knocking down Nemeth as he dribbled into the penalty area.

Sporting Kansas City advances to a quarterfinal matchup with Panama's Club Atletico Independiente, which got past Toronto FC 5-1 on aggregate earlier this week.
