Commentary On MTVW's Past Performance

MTVW's trailing twelve-month earnings (from 31 March 2019) of UK£28m has declined by -6.3% compared to the previous year.

Furthermore, this one-year growth rate has been lower than its average earnings growth rate over the past 5 years of -2.5%, indicating the rate at which MTVW is growing has slowed down. Why could this be happening? Well, let's look at what's occurring with margins and if the entire industry is feeling the heat.

In terms of returns from investment, Mountview Estates has fallen short of achieving a 20% return on equity (ROE), recording 7.6% instead. However, its return on assets (ROA) of 6.8% exceeds the GB Real Estate industry of 6.7%, indicating Mountview Estates has used its assets more efficiently. Though, its return on capital (ROC), which also accounts for Mountview Estates’s debt level, has declined over the past 3 years from 13% to 8.4%.

What does this mean?

Though Mountview Estates's past data is helpful, it is only one aspect of my investment thesis. Generally companies that experience a drawn out period of diminishing earnings are going through some sort of reinvestment phase Though if the entire industry is struggling to grow over time, it may be a signal of a structural shift, which makes Mountview Estates and its peers a riskier investment.
