SOUTH BEND ― A new concert series called “Music in the Hoyt” begins Oct. 16, presenting an array of musical genres and styles, all performed in the sanctuary at Zion United Church of Christ, 211 S. St. Peter St.

Local lyric tenor Michael Snyder, who’s creating the series, gives the first concert at 3 p.m. Oct. 16, accompanied by pianist Anthony Beer. Titled “An Afternoon of Song,” they’ll perform songs by Mozart and Robert Schumann’s song cycle “Dichterliebe,” or “A Poet’s Love.”

Each of the concerts ― two in the fall and two in the spring ― will have free admission. Donations are welcome.

The second concert will be “An Afternoon of Celtic Harp” with Anna Hagen at 3 p.m. Nov. 27.

“The Hoyt” is what German immigrants called the neighborhood where they settled, where Zion sits. It sounds like the word “haid,” which means heath. German Jews, Catholics and Protestants were known to live alongside each other in the neighborhood without the enmity of past prejudices.

Snyder, a South Bend native, earned a bachelor’s degree in music with a concentration in vocal performance at The Catholic University of America, in Washington, D.C., then went on to study English repertoire in the United Kingdom.
