Concerts, authors, monkeys & a serial killer: 7 top things to do on Cape Cod Dec. 10-16

There are numerous events to enjoy this week that have nothing, or at least very little, to do with Christmas. Music options include the Sandwich High School show choir, raising money for a future competition, and a classical music concert in Wellfleet.

Two virtual events will bring authors into your home to talk about their books. On a trip to the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History in Brewster, you can learn about the fascinating community of snow monkeys, while photographs of local wildlife are at the heart of a Wellfleet exhibit. And there's a chance for women to network and shop in South Yarmouth.

Sandwich Soul — Sandwich High School’s 37-person, award-winning show choir — will perform classic and contemporary selections as a group, and by various soloists, in a fundraiser. All concert proceeds go directly back to the students to help fund their upcoming trip to New York City to compete in a national choral festival and participate in a Broadway Musical Theater workshop.

When: 7 p.m. Friday

Where: Glass Town Stage, Sandwich Town Hall, 130 Main St.

Admission: $15 cash or check at the door

A snow monkey story

The Cape Cod Museum of Natural History will continue its "Nature Screen" film series with the PBS "Nature" documentary "Snow Monkeys." The film is set in the frigid valleys of Japan's Shiga Highlands, following a troop of snow monkeys as they make their way and raise their families in a complex society of rank and privilege. One little monkey, innocently unaware of his own lowly social rank, reaches out to this lonely leader, forming a bond. A second screening will take place Dec. 28.

Author talks about 19th-century serial killer

Falmouth Museums on the Green will host a virtual talk about the book "The Case of the Murderous Dr. Cream: The Hunt for a Victorian Era Serial Killer" with author Dean Jobb. The book tells the story of Dr. Thomas Neill Cream, who was brought to justice in 1892 after, over 15 years, killing as many as 10 people in the United States, Britain, and Canada. Many were desperate women who had turned to him for medical help, and his trial shows their vulnerability and investigators' bungling.

'Birds, Beasts, and Beach Trash' wildlife photographs

Wellfleet Preservation Hall will host an artist reception for "Birds, Beasts, and Beach Trash," a wildlife photography exhibit by local documentary filmmaker and photographer Ben Achtenberg. The show, on display through Jan. 5, focuses on Cape wildlife that are all around but may rarely be noticed. In addition to Achtenberg's own photographs, the images include “selfies” taken by deer, coyotes and other animals on motion-activated cameras set up in the photographer’s Wellfleet backyard. The show also chronicles some of the wildlife encounters the photographer and his wife, Emily, have experienced in the American West.
