Astronomy in the Park at Oak Grove Regional Park

The spiral galaxy NGC 4631 (nicknamed the “Whale Galaxy”) is seen edge-on, with its disk of stars shown in pink. The filaments, shown in green and blue, extend beyond the disk into the galaxy’s extended halo. Green indicates filaments with their magnetic field pointing roughly toward us and blue with the field pointing away. This phenomenon, with the field alternating in direction, has never before been seen in the halo of a galaxy.

Want to see the moon through a lens of a telescope? You can at Oak Grove Regional Park on Saturday, May 7. The Stockton Astronomical Society, the Oak Grove Docents Council and S.J. Parks are teaming up to present this International Astronomy Day Event.

Starting at 4 p.m. there will be astronomy themed activities and arts and crafts at the Nature Center and at 4:30 p.m. members of SAS will do Astronomy 101-style presentations.

Solar telescopes will be set up for solar viewing until 7 p.m. then starting at 8 p.m. there will be planetary scopes set up for the usual Astronomy in the Park event. Telescope viewing starts after sunset. When the sky becomes darker objects are more visible.

Every month the members of the Stockton Astronomical Society volunteer to set up their telescopes for the public to view the moon on the Saturday closest to the first quarter moon. Every month features a different deep sky object. May’s deep-sky object is the Whale Galaxy. The event may be canceled if the sky is not clear.
