Concerts in Millennium Park return to full capacity in July

Concerts at the Jay Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park will be fully open for full capacity this summer, according to an announcement Monday from Grant Park Music Festival.

The change goes into effect beginning with Grant Park Music Festival concerts July 2. Additionally, the seats that are free and open to the public in the Seating Bowl and the Great Lawn are now available on a first-come, first-served basis. Those seats no longer require advance registration, as has previously been announced.

The summer begins with an “Independence Day Salute” concert July 2-3, with selections by John Williams, Scott Joplin, Leonard Bernstein, Tchaikovsky, John Philip Sousa and others. The concert will bring back Festival HD, adding visuals and video on two screens at the sides of the Pritzker stage.

Artistic director and principal conductor Carlos Kalmar will lead the Grant Park Orchestra with Christopher Bell and the Grant Park Chorus in an eight-week season through Aug. 21. All concerts are free and most take place on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday evenings at 6:30 p.m. Concerts will be under 90 minutes with no intermission.

The rest of the season, produced in partnership with the Chicago Park District and the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events, includes the following, much of it previously announced in the Tribune:

Rossini’s “William Tell Overture” (July 7); Barber’s “Adagio for Strings” and symphonies by Brahms (July 9 and 10); Beethoven No. 1 (July 14); Sibelius Symphony No. 5 (July 16-17); Bruckner E Minor Mass with the Grant Park Chorus (July 21); Dvořák’s “New World Symphony” (July 23-24); Debussy’s “Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun” (July 28); “From Ireland with Love” (selections, Aug. 4); Sibelius Violin Concerto (Aug. 6-7); “Family Night” (Aug. 11); the festival’s usual Broadway tribute (Aug. 13-14); Schubert Mass in G Major with the Chorus (Aug. 18); Mozart Violin Concerto No. 3 (Aug. 20-21).
