The event will be from June 5, 2024 to June 8, 2024, and community members are invited to go and listen to the music. The event is free to attend, and community members will be able to go inside the carillon cabin where the instrument is played and meet the musicians.

The University of Michigan, Yale, and the University of Chicago are a few schools where the North America Guild of Carillonneurs Annual Congress have been held previously. The proposal to host the event at Concord University was submitted by Dr. Jacob Womack, Marsh Endowed Associate Professor of Music and Chair for the Department of Fine Arts and Communication, and Concord University Alumni Jesse Ratcliffe.

Performances by international level carillon performers, workshops for members of the guild, and performance examinations for prospective carillon players will be a part of the Carillon Congress. Musicians from across North America will be there, many of which are faculty members at prestigious higher education institutions.

Out of all the carillon’s in the United States, the only true grand carillon in West Virginia is at Concord University. A carillon is an instrument that is similar to the organ and piano. Consisting of 48 bells, with the largest bell weighing approximately 8 tons, Concord University’s carillon sits on top of Marsh Hall. The bells are controlled by 48 levers that are pressed down by a foot or with a closed fist, that then transfer sound through rods and clappers to ring the bells.
