Concord woman gives birth and wins $100K in Powerball on same day

A woman in Concord had two reasons to celebrate on one day in early November -- just hours after giving birth to her baby daughter, she ended up winning a $100,000 prize in a Powerball drawing.

On Nov. 9, Brenda Gomez Hernandez went into labor and delivered a baby girl. She had bought a $3 Quick Pick ticket and matched four white balls and the Powerball with the 2X Power Play multiplier that same night, according to the North Carolina Education Lottery.

“I feel like she brought me my luck, I’m so thankful,” said Hernandez. “When I found out, I cries, I’m just so excited and happy.”

Hernandez said she used her two sons’ birthdays to pick the numbers.

On Wednesday, Hernandez claimed her prize and took home $65,015 after tax withholdings. She said she’s going to use a large portion of her winnings toward paying for her house, the NC lottery said.
