Condé Nast Traveler named this Coconut Grove icon one of the best new hotels in the U.S.
A Coconut Grove icon has become the only Florida property to make a prestigious list of best new hotels.
Mayfair House Hotel & Garden, which reopened in 2022 after a two-year, $50 million renovation, was named to Condé Nast Traveler’s 2023 Hot List, a list brimming with the names of glamorous California and New York hotels.
First opened in 1985 and designed by architect Kenneth Treister, the hotel was inspired by the Barcelona buildings of Spanish architect Antoni Gaudi and reimagined by the New York-based design studio Goodrich, led by interior designer Matthew Goodrich.
“We had such love for the building,” Goodrich told the Miami Herald last year. “Kenneth Treister has pulled together so many unusual design references into one whole language.”
Condé Nast Traveler praised the hotel for its stand-out amenities.

“Instead of reinventing the wheel,” Ayesha Khan writes, the renovation “brings back the best the hotel ever had to offer. The 80s-heyday energy is back and better than ever.”
She goes on to single out special touches in the colorful rooms, such as working typewriters, bar carts with cocktail sets, craft snacks and oversized clawfoot tubs, and the hotel’s dining options: the “aromatic” wood-fired grill of the hotel restaurant, the Mayfair Grill, and Sipsip, the tropical rooftop pool bar, which serves some of the best old-fashioned daiquiris to be found in South Florida (we know — we tried them). Both are the creations of hospitality group Lost Boy & Co.
There are eight different types of rooms at the hotel, each with its own terrace and all accessible from the lush Mayfair courtyard. Some have outdoor showers; others have private walled gardens. No two rooms are exactly alike.
Laurens Zieren, vice president of operations at Crescent Hotels & Resorts, Mayfair’s management company, said the recognition was thrilling.
“Receiving this award for our hotel and the beautiful destination of Coconut Grove, Miami is a testament to the exceptional dedication and skill of our hospitality team in creating memorable experiences for our guests,” Zieren said.
Earlier this month, Mayfair House Hotel & Garden was also named one of the best new hotels in Travel + Leisure’s 2023 It List (along with three other Florida properties: Life House, South of Fifth in Miami Beach; Four Seasons Hotel & Residences in Fort Lauderdale; and Tampa Edition).
Condé Nast Traveler creates its Hot List, which is now in its 27th year, by sending its international team to research, visit and vet the properties for style, ethos and service.
