Confederate banner flies over TIAA Bank Field during Jags pregame, causing outrage

It was a dramatic day both on and off the field Sunday at Jacksonville Jaguars and Baltimore Ravens game.

Before the Jaguars even took to the field, controversy took to the skies. A plane carrying a Confederate flag and a message to put the confederate monuments back flew during the pregame.
Many Jags fan told Action News Jax that this isn’t something they want to see when coming to a football game. They were also outspoken with their opinions about Confederate monuments.
“I don’t agree with that whatsoever,” said Evan Fricke.

A video shows the banner attached to a small plane saying to “put monuments back.”
Fricke, who went to the game Sunday afternoon, said that to see this is heartbreaking.
“There are people in the world who just weren’t raised right. Like, really they weren’t. It just makes me mad,” said Fricke
Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry took to Twitter about this saying quote: “As I said before, there is no place for hate of any kind in our city. My position on monuments remains clear: I have allocated money for removal and empowered city council to take action.”

Action News Jax reached out to Kirk Lyons with Save Southern Heritage Florida, who paid for the plane and banner. He said they wanted to reach a large audience with their message.
“Save Southern Heritage Florida believes the cancel culture movement is so strong and well-financed. Moving forward, that it threatens American democracy,” said Lyons.
STORY: Missing girl was located safe
Action News Jax reached out to the City of Jacksonville to see if and when the city’s final monument might come down or how that process could work, but we have yet to hear back.
Lyons said Confederate monuments don’t support white supremacy, but instead the Confederate soldiers who died in the American Civil War.
