Congratulations class of 2023: Port Huron Northern celebrates commencement

McMorran Arena was packed with family and friends eager to watch the Port Huron Northern graduating senior cross the stage into the next chapter of their lives Tuesday.

There were about 240 students in the 58th class to graduate from Port Huron Northern.

Port Huron Northern Principal Alycia Shagena said she knew there would be many alumni in the audience and asked them to stand and show Huskie pride with a round of applause.

"I hope you all enjoy this night with extra Northern pride as you watch the class of 2023 take the next big step in their lives just as you did as a graduate of Northern High School," Shagena said.

Superintendent Theo Kerhoulas said it was an honor and privilege to speak in front of the graduates. He said the Port Huron class of 2023 are entering into a world of new technology such as artificial intelligence and self-driving cars without fear. He said the graduates are entering this new chapter of their lives with curiosity, compassion and acceptance.

"The future strength of our community relies on your ability to come together and support each other regardless of your differences," Kerhoulas said. "Continue to be the and kind human beings we know and love."

Dr. Randa Jundi-Samman gave the commencement address. She has worked closely with Port Huron Area Schools by organizing fun fitness in the elementary schools, directing the K's for Kids Fun Run and has organized many other events and campaigns for the district.

Jundi-Samman said the graduates should be proud of their accomplishments as Port Huron Northern Huskies. She said she knows the graduates will push onward into their futures, even when things get tough. She said they have the tools to do whatever they want with their lives.

"Congratulations to all of you. You're here," Jundi-Samman said. "But now the road begins, and your next adventure starts."

Tuesday’s ceremony also featured a final performance with seniors in the high school band and choir. Additionally, a few of the graduates performed the chosen class song, "I'll Always Remember You" by Miley Cyrus.

Port Huron Area Schools has one more commencement ceremony for the Phoenix Academy and Harrison Center at 6:30 p.m., June 12 at the Port Huron High School Performing Arts Center, located at 2215 Court St.
