Congratulations to Misty Long who was named Coach of the Year

Congratulations to Cavegirl Soccer Coach Misty Long, who was unanimously selected as Coach of the Year by the New Mexico Sports Hall of Fame. Coach Long has been invited to the awards banquet Aug. 20 at the Albuquerque Convention Center. Under Coach Long’s leadership, the Cavegirl soccer program has become the dominant program in the entire state. The Cavegirls recently won their first soccer state championship ever. They lost to Cibola in the state tournament in the fall. Coach Long’s selection is for all sports – only one coach is selected each year.

The Boys & Girls Club of Carlsbad was selected to receive a $1,000, thanks to Carlsbad Caveman Nolan Perry, who picked the club as a recipient after being selected as the Gatorade New Mexico Baseball Player of the Year.

The Gatorade Play It Forward initiative works with the program to empower student-athletes to provide resources to sports organizations in their community. All 60 Gatorade Player of the Year award winners have the opportunity to select a youth sports organization for the $1,000 grant. Thanks to Nolan for his excellent selection!

Some more good news out of Guadalupe Mountains National Park- the Park has announced that it will resume issuing wilderness permits for overnight camping in the Guadalupe Mountains Wildnerness. Remaining camp stove use restrictions have also been lifted. The Dog Canyon developed area remains closed due to a water system leak. Additionally, Sitting Bull Falls, in the Lincoln National Forest, is now back open seven days a week. Gates open at 8:30 a.m. and close to incoming traffic at 4 p.m. Sitting Bull Falls is one of our area’s greatest treasures, and a great place to cool off in the summer, but please help us avoid the issues we’ve had over the past few years with litter and left-behind picnic items. In 2020, the recreation area was forced to close after it was overwhelmed during Memorial Day weekend and visitors left behind piles of trash. Please help us keep this outstanding Eddy County location clean and beautiful.

Just a reminder that our summer concert series will continue this Saturday with a performance by the Beer Cousins. Please join us at the water park gazebo from 7-9 p.m. to enjoy this free local band performance. These performances are sponsored by Brandon Chandler and Nuclear Waste Partnership.
