The biggest priority will be passing a budget by December 16, before government funding runs out.

The heads of the departments that depend on that funding are urging Congress to pass the full-year budget as soon as possible.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin testified earlier this year about how that funding is needed for the department to carry out its mission, “defending our nation, taking care of our people, and succeeding through teamwork.”

Another major focus will be taking up the Respect for Marriage Act. The bill would give federal protections for same-sex and interracial marriages.

It’s a move that supporters say is necessary after the Supreme Court overturned Roe. vs Wade. The bill is expected to pass in the full Senate.

Lawmakers are also bracing for proposals that are not expected to be taken up before the end of the year.

Many democrats have again been pushing for an assault weapons ban and stricter gun safety laws in the wake of three high-profile mass shootings just this month.

However, Senate Democrats say they don’t have the 60 votes needed to pass an assault weapons ban.

Republicans have argued such a ban violates the rights of law-abiding gun owners.

Congressional Republicans also say the committee investigating the January 6 Capitol attack will be dismantled once they take control.
